I assume you have not cleanly shut down the PI, and given OS and SD-card the opportunity to flush open files to the card, which might have damaged an essential file.

Simply re-flash the card.

I got this same problem. After removing Samba package that I had installed, then I rebooted normally with 'sudo reboot', and then tried to StartX and only thing I see is:

No Protocol specified

it repeats over and over for 5 minutes and then it gives up and back to $ prompt

I deleted the /home/pi .Xauthority, then launched StartX, it created a new .Xauthority but not a Go, it came out saying PRIMARY DEVICE IS NOT PCI (was using /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d file)

So I guess at this point it means RE-FLASH, and RE-SIZE PARTITIONS (using Gparted in another PC)

Hello, I have the same problem of my raspberry. Let ask if Raspian have some option for desinstall the last modification of the the file system? I don't know why the Xorg was damage.
