Recently I got a raspberry pi and want to use it via a laptop. So, I used a hdmi, plugged it into pi and laptop, however nothing appeared. Can anyone help me on how I can fix this or I need a different cable?

You plugged the Pi HDMI socket into the laptop HDMI socket? Usually laptops have HDMI
outputs. You have connected an output to an output. It can not work unless your laptop HDMI socket can be configured as an
input.

Read the link I posted which applies to the Raspbian Operating System

Yea, the link really helped but just one question. If I go into ssh, scroll down and click the windows link, it will transfer me to a page about putty. It will say to type an ip adress. What IP address should I use?

1) Learn how to enable internet connection sharing (ICS)
on Windows. Google has lots of tutorials on this.
2) Connect the Pi and the Laptop with an Ethernet cable ,
no crossover cable necessary.
3) Enter the IP address of the Pi assigned by ICS into PuTTY.
Refer to your googled guide on how to get that one.

The micro-usb input is only for power. And if you use HDMI you'll need an HDMI input.

HDMi no as already explained
USB no as you need a Master and Slave Device to communicate, both the RPi and Laptops are Master
All this and more covered in this forum and google

Have you set up Internet Connection Sharing on you Windows Laptop
You need to inform what you have done as no one can actually see what you are doing, my Crystal Ball is broken today

Yea, mate, how do u enable internet connection sharing?
P.S: It says the Ethernet is an unidentified network. This could have a link to the internet connection sharing process.

Have we established that ICS is even necessary? Wouldn't it be easier to connect the Pi directly to your router?
BTW, if you want this "tethering" thing to really work, you might be better off with the BeagleBoneBlack, which has a nifty tethering thing built right in.

What would I do once I've connected the pi to the router?

Could we go right back to the beginning a moment? I don't see anything to say that you have installed an Operating System on your RPi. Presumably Raspbian if you want to do general projects from The MagPi.
Once you have Raspbian installed and running on your RPi, turn your attention to your PC. I can't see whether you said it is a Windows PC or a Mac? If it is Windows, install an all-in-one package like XMing. Once it is installed, fire it up and make a connection to your RPi. The IP address you need can be found by looking at the network configuration page of your home router (if you have connected that way), or by looking at the ICS status page if that is what you have done.

Indeed! And there isn't an option to delete them.
(Forum software anomaly: if I press submit and the system responds 'error, try again later' guess what I did: tried again of course... I didn't think my message had been posted! Apologies for the 'noise'.)

Yeah. I'd be curious to know what caused the forum to go haywire earlier today (of course, we can all be glad it didn't do the chocolate nonsense again - we'll be happy if that never happens again…).
But I guess one has to be aware that on posting, it does go through, it is just the "re-painting" of the screen that fails. FWIW, my browser warned me when I tried to send it again - it said "Are you sure you want to send this form again - doing so could result in duplicate purchases or worse…"
