GUI screen frozen. How do i shut down? (solved)

Sat Nov 01, 2014 1:49 pm

I managed to boot up ok. I have a keyboard (Xenta wired slim chiclet model SK-094) attached but no mouse. The keyboard worked fine until in entered startx and the GUI appeared. There is no response to the keyboard so how do I shut down the Pi?
I'm afraid to just cut the power in case it causes any ill effects.
Whatever women do, they must do twice as well as men to be thought half as good. Luckily, this isn't difficult.
If you have nothing nice to say about anyone, come and sit by me.
Do I keep my mouth shut and look stupid or do I open it and remove all doubt.

I somehow managed to get out of it. Control+Alt+F1 zapped the GUI and Control+Alt+F2 took me to the login page so I shut down safely.

In raspi-config, there should be a setting when you are setting it up which allows you to exit the GUI with CTRL+ALT+Backspace. The raspberry pi will be a bit slow, since it is so small. As for pulling the power, always have a backup of it if there are important files on it, but pulling the plug is usually safe.

P.S. Or you could go beyond and build a button that connects to the GPIO that lets you exit the GUI
