apt-get update fails; Wolfram repo down

Sun Sep 21, 2014 9:36 am

It looks like the Wolfram apt repository is currently down. One of the symptoms of this problem is that sudo apt-get update will currently error out with "Could not connect to repository.wolfram.com:80 (140.177.204.60), connection timed out".

Here are some pings and traceroutes which may help Wolfram or RPi staff diagnose and fix the problem.

It may be helpful if someone outside the British Isles could also post some traceroutes.

From my home IP in Tewkesbury, UK on PlusNet FTTC:

Latest version of Raspbian don't include repository.wolfram.com in any of the sources listed in /etc/apt/sources.list or in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*.list

So the quick workaround is to comment out any reference to repository.wolfram.com and run sudo apt-get update.

Got a fresh install of Raspbian, my sources.list is :

Code: Select all

pi@hathor ~ $ cat /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://mirrordirector.raspbian.org/raspbian/ wheezy main contrib non-free rpi
pi@hathor ~ $
But apt still looking for repository.wolfram.com :

Code: Select all

pi@hathor ~ $ sudo apt-get update

If you have a workaround I'll take it! :)

Ok I edited my post cause in my /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ I have a wolfram.list which contain :

Code: Select all

pi@hathor ~ $ cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/wolfram.list
deb http://repository.wolfram.com/raspbian/ stable non-free
So i guess I just have to rename it!

Check for any list files in /etc/apt/sources/list.d/

I have the same problem.

Do you just remove wolfram.list file in /etc/apt/source.list.d?

mv it to a new name that doesn't end with .list I use .list~

I renamed it to:

wolfram.listDONOTUSE

But note that now all the "apt" programs will generate warnings (notes, I guess, given the N:) like:

$ apt-cache search splitvt
splitvt - run two programs in a split screen
N: Ignoring file 'wolfram.listDONOTUSE' in directory '/etc/apt/sources.list.d/' as it has an invalid filename extension
N: Ignoring file 'wolfram.listDONOTUSE' in directory '/etc/apt/sources.list.d/' as it has an invalid filename extension
$

Which is a little annoying, but can be lived with…

If it annoy you just mv the file back to his right name and comment the line in it. That should do the trick! :)

That's actually a good idea. Wish I'd thought of it…

Thanks for telling how to work around this.
I commented out the only line in wolfram.list with a #.

Code: Select all

# apt-config dump | grep Dir::Ignore-Files-Silently::
Dir::Ignore-Files-Silently:: "~$";
Dir::Ignore-Files-Silently:: "\.disabled$";
Dir::Ignore-Files-Silently:: "\.bak$";
Dir::Ignore-Files-Silently:: "\.dpkg-[a-z]+$";
Dir::Ignore-Files-Silently:: "\.save$";
Dir::Ignore-Files-Silently:: "\.orig$";
All those extensions are silently ignored in /etc/apt/sources.list.d

Thanks for that solution! Found it cleaner/better since apt will not open the file for nothing!

Hi Vallahangga! The best solution is to rename (mv) the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/wolfram.list to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/wolfram.disabled.

Code: Select all

sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list.d/wolfram.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/wolfram.disabled
As Ghans pointed it out, apt will ignore files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d which end with those extensions : .disabled, .save, .bak, ... (see Ghans post for the full list)

In which the schmoe says:

# cd /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
# mv -v wolfram.list wolfram.disabled
# apt-get update

The Wolfram repository now appears to be back up and available again.
I haven't checked within the past 24 hours, but the scuttlebutt seemed to be that it was down again, so I think we should assume that it has become unreliable.

But that's not the purpose of this post. The purpose of this post is to note that renaming the wolfram.list file (as described above) actually solves neatly the real wolfram problem - which is that if you leave it as .disabled, then your "apt-get upgrade"s will finish in normal time (instead of taking days to complete). I just did this now to verify it.

And that can only be a Good Thing.

The word on the street is that the repo will not be added to future images and the relevant packages are in the raspberrypi.org repo.
