BerryBoot, CPU temperature and powered USB

My SD card got corrupted several times because I am running motion on my Raspberry and constantly reading and writing on my card (64GB SanDisk). SanDisk told me that although they are replacing the card I am using it not for the purpose it was built. So I replaced my OS with BerryBoot and I plugged a 64GB Transcend USB stick into my raspberry. Hopefully, that system will be more stable.

I have two questions to my colleagues:

1) I noticed that with a USB stick the CPU temperature is almost 7-10 degree Celsius higher than with the OS on the SD card. Did anyone observe something similar?

2) I am planning another raspberry with flightradar24-support, wifi and USB stick. So I need a USB Hub. I believe I should use a powered hub - any experiences with that? Is USB-3.0 necessary?

If you get a B+, you may not need the hub....
