Initial switch on problem

Fri Aug 22, 2014 12:51 pm

I am really a noob at this (old fart). This may be a really stupid question, but I do need a bit steering.

Setup:-
RPi B+, NOOBS v 1.3.9 on MSD card, WiFi dongle, case and PSU bought from Pi Hut. Locally sourced :- LG 22" tv , HDMI cable, Advent Keyboard and mouse, network cable to netgear 8 way switch.

On switch on I get an error dialogue box PIC1

shows after first image is closed. Listed options only online line help is available, clicking for any od the OS optiona just brings up the red "NEEDED xxxx MB, available 0 MB"

Have I missed something somewhere? I was expecting the RPI to run on its own memory.
Please be gentle.

What size is your SD Card? Is it a pre-installed card or did you download / copy Noobs yourself?

It's an 8GB SD card pre-installed RASPBIAN, from The Pi Hut.

If Raspian was pre-installed why is it coming up with NOOBS?

Anyway... looks like whole card was formatted rather than partitioned and then formatted.
Perhaps windows was being "helpful"?
Without partitions to resize gparted failed meaning there's nowhere to install anything on.

Look for a tutorial on how to partition and format a NOOBS card and you should be OK.
(I can't help with windows, don't use it enough to be familiar with it).

I sorry but I'm not used to all these new terms.
All I can say is the invoice from The PiHut says "8GB Card pre-installed with RASPIAN for the Raspberry Pi"

Pic 2 in first post shows the options and is headed "NOOBS V1.3.9. built July 8 2014.

If I'm reading it right that includes different flavours of OSs etc.

The easiest solution is to re-install Noobs from scratch: http://www.raspberrypi.org/help/noobs-setup
Rather than negativity think outside the box !
RPi 4B 4GB (SSD Boot)..
Asus ChromeBox 3 Celeron is my other computer...

I've seen the "Error: Can't have a partition outside the disk!" error before and it usually indicates that someone has used 'dd' to copy NOOBS from one SD card onto a slightly smaller SD card. (and hence the partition-table ends up saying that the partition is bigger than the entire disk)

The fix is to format the entire card using SDFormatter (with format size adjustment on) before copying over the NOOBS files using e.g. Windows Explorer. Just like the instructions say... ;)

On further investigation, on switch on I have spotted an earlier "action box??" with the sliding blue bar, which says something about re-sizing I think, but it's quite quick. Then the error box in PIC1 shows up.

I did contact The PiHut and they are going to look at the preloaded SD card, so I have sent it back.

I have also bought another Micro SD card and that should arrive today. So I'll burn another copy of NOOBS and see what happens.

Updates to follow.

Success!
I installed my new SD card with NOOBs v1.3.9. Although the info and contents in the NOOBs file looked identical the new card did it's thing and memory is now available and,I am able to load up OSs.

I'll wait for the other card to come back from PiHut and see if they tell me what was wrong.

Thanks to those who responded.

Regards,

Howard.
