B+ Raspbmc and WiFi help !

Fri Aug 01, 2014 7:10 pm

A very helpful person posted this as a clue to getting WiFi running on Raspbmc

Quote:-

Tutorial

Before you start this tutorial you must have your raspberry Pi connected up with your Ethernet cable plugged in.

Step 1: In XBMC navigate to Settings.

Step 2: Go to Add-ons

Step 3: Select Get Add-ons

Step 4: Now select XBMC.org Add-ons

Step 5: Select program Add-ons

Step 6: Select Network-Manager and click Install

Now that you have Network Manger installed go to XBMC main screen. Now follow the steps below.

Step 1: Go to program’s and select Network-Manager

Step 2: I’m presuming that your dongle is connected and it should be showing in Network Manager now. Simply click on it and enter your network password.

Step 3: You should now be on WiFi unplug your Ethernet and give it a try.

end quote

the step 6 does not work as it says it needs 0.9 which is the ubuntu variant.

I'm sure all that is correct however I've not got the skill to fix it.

So I guess the question remains 'how to I get Raspbmc onto WiFi with a RPi B+' ?

Any thoughts very very very welcome !

A puzzled,

Tim

I think the information you have been sent to is incorrect for latest Raspbmc version !

I created a SD Card following this tutorial, Network Install, this morning

http://www.raspbmc.com/wiki/user/os-x-l ... stallation

The MT7601 WiFi Dongle was not recognised, so used Ethernet connection to complete setup

On main screen click on the Raspbmc Settings along bottom of screen, next to the RaspBMC Browser l...

This brings up the "Settings -Raspbmc Settings" Page

Alternatively it can be accessed via Sytem - Settings - Add-ons - Enabled add-ons - Program Add-ons - Raspbmc Settings

I am now stuck as it does not recognise the MT7601 WiFi Dongle, trying a RTL8188CUS Dongle and recognised but will not connect, it is a clunky setup

Many thanks for responding !

I've been prodding the Raspbmc and a Xubuntu box with Xbmc all day...

First off I discovered a variant of my first posts instructions worked a treat out of the box and I now have the Xubuntu box working just on WiFi and have disconnected the Ethernet cable.

Here is the variant:-

Tutorial

Before you start this tutorial you must have your raspberry Pi connected up with your Ethernet cable plugged in.

Step 1: In XBMC navigate to Settings.

Step 2: Go to Add-ons

Step 3: Select Get Add-ons

Step 4: Now select XBMC.org Add-ons

Step 5: Select program Add-ons

Step 6: Select Network-Manager and click Install

Step7: Click ob "ADD" on the right hand side of the screen and it will show all thepossible WiFi connects on you patch

Now that you have Network Manger installed go to XBMC main screen. Now follow the steps below.

Step 1: Go to program’s and select Network-Manager

Step 2: I’m presuming that your dongle is connected and it should be showing in Network Manager now. Simply click on it and enter your network password.

Step 3: You should now be on WiFi unplug your Ethernet and give it a try.

end quote

As for the Raspbmc WiFi.... I'm still no wise as to get version 0.9 of network-manger installed.

Any more thoughts anyone ?

What has Xubuntu have to do with the Pi ??? They are different CPU architecture and different installations !!

As I stated in my response you do not need the Network Manager add-on, a suitable add-on for Raspbmc is included by default if you are using the latest version of Raspbmc..

I tried:-

"Alternatively it can be accessed via Sytem - Settings - Add-ons - Enabled add-ons - Program Add-ons - Raspbmc Settings"

And I tried 'Configure'

It had:-

MAC address B8:27:EB:A7:CC:E6
Network Mode Wireless(WiFi)
USE DHCP with a button clicked to active
Unique DHCP Client Name ditto
IP address 192.168.1.111
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.1
DNS Server 8.8.8.8

but nowhere to enter the password for the wifi modem....

So I'm still puzzled...

Many thanks for responding...

When you changed from the default Ethernet to Wireless, then scroll further down the list for "Scan Networks"

IF your WiFi Adaptor has been installed by Raspbmc and your Network is shown it will allow you to enter the Credentials.

I unpluged the ethernet and rebooted Raspbmc.

went through getting to right page then I tried the option System Configuration.

That asked for a password which I typed in and confirmed, but alas error messages when I try and watch any videos...

I think I must have missed something obvious... Never found the Scan networks option but have now !.

Just testing it ....

update:- nuked Raspbmc so laying in another install... Looks like game over for today....
