USB speed

Hi guys, Is it normal, that max speed when copying files from SD/HDD to the same hdd or to another hard drive 4,5 MB (~25Mbit) per second. I understand, that if I copy something to slow SD card, speed cannot be more than 3-5 MB/s, but why there is the same speed when copying FROM SD card/USB Memory Stick/HDD to another device plugged in via USB. The same with network (wired): maximum speed between my laptop (connected to router, wireless n) and raspberry pi (connected to router by wire) not more than 3 MB/s?
1. I tried this in different configurations: rootfs on SD and rootfs on external hdd - no difference
2. Led "10M" glows, it means network speed should be 100Mbit
3.Tried difference usb cables and two different power supply
4. The same speed with/without X server started
5. I use Arch linux with latest firmware and updates. At this moment rootfs is on the hard drive and have a SWAP ~ 600Mbytes
6. Tried with hdd connected directly to RasPi (of course with additional power) and via powered USB hub.
What is yours maximum speed?
Sorry for my poor english.
