[SOLVED] internet access Buffalo WLI-UC-GNM2

I have a problem with accessing the internet using a WIFI dongle.
Dongle: Buffalo WLI-UC-GNM2

I tried to setup using the GUI from the desktop.

The scan finds my WIFI router.
I enter the password and click on add.
Now, it tries to access it but it doesn't seem to work. Never did I get an IP address.

The error message is: 4-Way Handshake failed - pre-shared key may be incorrect

If I look into /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf, I find several times a "network" entry and one of them contains a wrong password (psk key). I tried to fix it using nano, but it doesn't work.

Could this be the reason, or should I look for something else.

Thank you
Michael

Connection by wire is OK.

I dunno but in what way did nano not work. Did if fail to write to the file or is the password in the file now okay?

Sorry, misunderstanding.
nano itself worked flawlessly.

I wanted to say, I corrected the wrong password with nano and then checked again. I got the same error, even after rebooting.

Please post the output from
uname -a
lsusb
cat /etc/network/interfaces
sudo cat /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf (with the password redacted)

Thank you for looking into it.
Regarding the password, in two cases, the second and third character is missing - see below.
The requested information follows.

Try
sudo apt-get install rpi-update
sudo rpi-update
sudo reboot

If that doesn't fix it you should buy a new WiFi dongle that uses a well supported realtek or ralink chipset.

I would suggest you edit your /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf and set it to

Code: Select all

ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1

network={
	ssid="network-name"
	psk="network-password"
}
wpa_supplicant will sort out all the remaining entries such as pairwise, group etc. itself.

If you are using command

Code: Select all

wpa_passphrase essid passphrase
to generate the psk try using the plain text phrase instead. Searching the internet using the error message you've been getting has suggested there may be a problem with command wpa_passphrase.

Yes, and it seems that this happens already since more than 10 years.
Nevertheless, I found the solution (I am writing this now using the WIFI dongle).

In
"network={
ssid="BUFFALO-4C10A3"
psk="tu5++++++++"
proto=RSN
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
pairwise=TKIP
group=TKIP WEP104 WEP40
auth_alg=OPEN
}"

I first corrected the wrong password and then I changed
"proto=RSN"
to
"proto=WPA RSN"
as indicated in
https://forums.freebsd.org/viewtopic.php?&t=37031

So, whom should I contact to tell about this problem and its solution?
And thank you to you guys for taking your time with other people's problems.

Michael
