apt-get stuck

Fri May 09, 2014 2:38 am

Every time I try to install mysql with 'sudo apt-get install mysql-server', it freezes on the trigger. I have tried 5 or 6 times with new images. I have tried letting it run for a day. I am using the RASPBIAN january version. Is it safe to just ctrl-c or what should I do?

Have you run the following to update Raspbian ?

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Then in future always run the first command prior to apt-get install to ensure the repositories are up to date..

Seems to be some problem of the mysql-server package. I have exactly the same problem with it. Stays forever on "Processing triggers for menu ...", not only on installing, also on removing the package. All other packages work fine.

I just CTRL-C'ed out, everything worked (also mysql-server).

I switched to sqlite after that, since I wanted a more lightweight database. If you are not forced to mysql this could also be an alternative for you.

Mysql first got stuck on Sunday May 4th on an update for mysql. After that it would always get stuck on the one location.

Try
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -f install # with no other operands

I just want a LAMP or similar to host a website with phpmyadmin. I would try to post a bug for mysql then if someone else has the same issue.

I am still stuck here at the 'Processing triggers for menu ...'
I have a already built website on MySQL and I have phpmyadmin on a LAMP.
I left my Pi working for a day and it would not go past the point.
I don't know what to do.

Have you tried pressing Ctrl-C yet?

I don't know if Ctrl-C is safe?
It would crash on install, update, and uninstall.

Re: apt-get stuck

I had the same problem as the original poster.

I am dual booting Raspbian and OpenELEC using NOOBS. I am running Raspbian and ran the command:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install mysql-server mysql-client php5-mysql
... but it hangs at 'Processing triggers for menu ...' I hit CTRL + C and now want to undo the half baked install with the command:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge mysql-server
... but it is now hanging on: "Reading Package lists... 0%"
I read that the problem may be because the file system ran out of space but I did a df - h and there is still lots of space on my 32 GB SD card and NOOBS automatically expands the filesystem to fill up the card anyway.

I also tried the command suggested above:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -f install
... but once again it is hanging on: "Reading Package lists... 0%"
Any advice on what I should do now? Start all over with a fresh NOOBs installation? I guess I should have made a backup of the Raspbian/OpenELEC dual boot setup before trying to install anything.

Anyone managed to install MySQL on Raspbian?

I gave up and just ctrl-c out. Ran:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get -y install heirloom-mailx libaio1 libdbd-mysql-perl libdbi-perl libhtml-template-perl mysql-client-5.5 mysql-server-core-5.5
sudo apt-get install mysql-server-5.5
sudo shutdown -r now
sudo apt-get install mysql-server
It will crash on mysql-server-5.5. My raspberry pi was extremely laggy after crash so I just restarted and everything was fine. I have not noticed anything not working. I am running a LAMP with PHPmyadmin and everything seems ok.

Got a reply at MySQL and they said its a Raspberry Pi issue because no one outside Raspberry Pi (Me) has reported this issue.

Hi rakosi2,

I started another thread over here: http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewt ... 76#p556176 and a few other people have had the same experience as us. I also notice that even though the install hangs at the end, if you wait a while (I waited about an hour) you can then Ctrl+C out and it looks like the install works anyway... tho surely something won't be quite right?!

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug to MySql. It looks like an issue with the Pi (not enough memory?) or with the Raspbian OS (a file permission problem?). I might try and install MySql on Pidora and see if it works or not.

If you find a solution, please report it back to this thread?

Confirmed. I have tryed to install MySQL onto RASPBIAN (2013-09-25-wheezy-raspbian) and worked without crashing. It has to be 2014-01-07-wheezy-raspbian that is causing the crashes.

I used the 2013-09-25 version because I had it downloaded already. I have no clue if the other versions work. You can get the archive here,

Yes the fix is to use an older distro if you want it to complete or you could Ctrl-C at the crash.

rakosi2...

Thanks for the link to the archive of past Raspbian Images!

http://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspbian/images/

I was trying to get an older-than-Jan-2014 Raspbian installed so I could get a clean start-to-finish-install of MySql... I was working from a NOOBS SD card that had an Oct 2013 Raspbian on it but when you install that you still have all the NOOBS stuff on the SD Card taking up space. I was trying to move and copy and delete partitions but it just wasn't happening for me. Now at least I can just start with a blank slate and finally get my LAMP server up and running!

I was having trouble with the command:

Code: Select all

apt-get install mysql-server
When using the January version of Raspbian the MySql install was freezing almost at the end on the line: 'Processing Triggers for Menu' I can confirm the fix in that thread link worked for me and thanks for the heads-up!

So the issue is reported here:
https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues/617

The raspberry pi is trying to process 4096 GB of data making it:
  • Writes to the filesystem slow to a crawl
  • The ACT LED is almost permanently illuminated during IO
  • All processes waiting on IO spend a lot of the time sleeping, waiting for IO to complete.
No wonder it didn't finish in a week, It's trying to process 4 terabytes of dirty pages.

The problem's been fixed! https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/co ... 1a479d65a8
(well, technically it's been worked around)

You can either rpi-update to get the latest firmware (which includes the fix) https://github.com/Hexxeh/rpi-firmware/ ... 4ccf48091a
or you can simply use the latest 2014-06-20 version of Raspbian from http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads which includes the fix too. The 2014-06-20 version of Raspbian is also included in the new NOOBS v1.3.8 8-)

I helped track down the problem, and @jdb, @gsh and @popcornmix fixed it.

I think your problem might be that you have the firmware from April. Try installing more up to date firmware and see if the MySQL installs this time... I ran this command to update my firmware:

rpi-update f6eef32dd6388c3b04dbf462bd324d93281bf397

I forgot to mention that I'm using firmware from NEXT branch. Anyway, I solved it by manually compiling and installing MariaDB instead.

Strange thing is, that when I added mysql/mariadb to run after boot with

Code: Select all

sudo update-rc.d mysqld defaults
and then installing other packages, aptitude get stuck at

Code: Select all

[100%] Writing extended state information
Turn off mysqld service didn't help. Only removing from rc.d.
