How do I update OpenElec?

Wed May 07, 2014 12:56 am

I'm on version 3.2.3 of OpenElec and I am told upon reboot that I have pending OS updates. How do I apply these updates? I see nowhere to do this.

as OpenELEC told you, simply reboot your system...

in OpenELEC under System, OpenELEC, System, Updates, there are these three options:
Automatic Updates: auto
Show Update Notifications: *
Check for updates now: *

... but i think this will not update from OpnELEC 3.x to 4.x.
or it is still not available as automatic upgrade.

on my system i had to do this...

but you can update your version with help of a second computer.
your OpenELEC shares some folders as network shares.
there is a shared folder with name "Update"
e.g.:
from windows, you open it in file browser by typing in
\\192.168.0.123\Update
(where you have to take the IP address of YOUR RaspberryPi)

download the "OpenELEC Stable - Raspberry Pi ARM" from:
http://openelec.tv/get-openelec/downloa ... -pi-builds

open that just dornloaded "OpenELEC-RPi.arm-4.0.0.tar" (e.g. with 7-zip from 7-zip.org)
take the files
SYSTEM,
SYSTEM.md5,
KERNEL,
KERNEL.md5
from the folder "target" from inside the compressed file
and copy them to the Update folder network share to your RaspberryPi.

now you can reboot your RaspberryPi and OpenELEC upgrades automatically.
on next boot, you will see messages like
check system... ok
check kernel... ok

or similar messeges, and Open ELEC reboots again. after that, OpenELEC starts up with its new upgraded version OpenELEC 4.0 with XBMC 13.0.

i would suggest you to do not upgrade to OpenELEC 4.0. :( :o
OpenELEC 3.2.3 was the last well working version, where i das able to playback SD and HD videos without freeze. i tried OpenELEC4.0 and many beta versions in between of 3.2.4 to 4.0 ans all had problems with hd video playback and freeze my RPi.
so i downgraded ...
in the same way as described above...
i downloaded an older version 3.2.3 and put the four files to the Update folder and rebooted...
and applied an older backup of my settings i made just befor i tried the new OpenELEC version.

i am sorry for that...

When is the next release past 4.0 going to happen?

Also, what blog/website can I follow to see when new stable releases happen?

Thanks.

So since 4.0 is a no go, is 3.2.4 okay?

You're welcome. I don't know. I'm a RaspBMC user.

It would seem very few complaints so far regarding updating to OpenElec 4, the proviso appears to be to undertake manually

So if 4.0 is fine, why did the other guy say something? All I play are avi files from an external drive for the most part. I assume I'm good for that with 4.0?

4.0 works fine for me, although there are reports of random freezes which may be associated with USB. Performance on the Pi has improved dramatically with 4.0 so it's certainly worth upgrading.

Yeah I did upgrade. 4.0 is much smoother as far as the UI is concerned. Not to shabby.

i tried OpenELEC 3.2.4 up to the newest OpenELEC 4.0.
use FullHD videomaterial (1920x1080) compressed as MKV by using Handbrake and its "High Profile".
the videomaterial i playback is on a NAS (smb).
my RPi (rev.:2 512 MB) plays the videos without problems, when i use omxplayer directly, or via RaspBMC... but OpenELEC 3.2.4+ up to the acrual 4.0 many times the RPi freeze randomly.

and the most annoing thing is, when i tell that in the OpenELEC issue tracker or IRC i get to hear - there are no developer available for support RPi and they say, that RPi is absolutely crap and they don't want to support RPi anymore... they also told me, i should buy an ION or something equals.
thats what i absolutely do not understand - then they should not use the name OpenELEC - thats stand for "Open Embedded Linux Entertainment Center" - an ION is not that, what i would call Embedded device...

anyhow... if OpenELEC works for you gusy, than you can be very happy with this. but for me it is not working. i am happy, that the other solution is doing its job well - and i am posting it, in hope to help other people with having the same problem.

i copied the 4 files over to the "update" folder and rebooted the system. it rebooted and the OpenELEC logo was up for about 5 minutes and then the screen went black. The screen has been black now for about 10 minutes. Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks,
Chris

It may of been mentioned before but it would seem going from 3.x to 4.x is fraught with issues..

The solution is to undertake a fresh install and basically start afresh, carefully choosing any 3rd party add-ons to use..

The latest is OpenElec 4.0.7 http://openelec.tv/get-openelec/viewcat ... -pi-builds

OpenELEC-RPi2.arm-6.0.3.img.gz comes with an update file OpenELEC-RPi2.arm-6.0.3.tar. No instructions about.

Thanks in advance

take the img.gz file for installing LibreELEC/OpenELEC from scratch.
the tar file is for updating only - in case you have already LibreELEC/OpenELEC installed and running.
or use NOOBS to install LibreELEC (it is a fork of the OpenELEC Project and is actually the more recent ...ELEC development)

for LibreElec, see...

for OpenELEC, see...

You are responding to a 2 year old post regards to OpenElec version 3 to version 4 which was current at that time, if you are running version 4 you must manually update to version 5 then version 6:
