0bda:8176 Realtek RTL8188CUS wifi

Sat Apr 19, 2014 9:11 am

Hi,
I'm using Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0bda:8176 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8188CUS 802.11n WLAN Adapter usb wifi adapter.
Internet browsing speed is fine but when I copy files (via samba share) from the raspberry usb hdd (ext4 partition) to my desktop computer it's very slow, 200KBytes/sec.
Desktop is connected via ethernet and raspberry via wifi.
What happens?

Assuming you've got a reasonable power supply (if not use a powered hub) then it's probably something you'll just have to live with.

The Raspberry Pi isn't the fastest thing on the planet, it has a problem that ALL network and USB peripheral I/O goes through a single SMSC9512/9514 chip (it's driving the Ethernet and the USB hub (both ports)). You may get some improvements with later firmware but it will never be lightening fast.

I0m using a nokia 1,2A power supply and directly plugged into rpi usb-wifi adapter.
Maybe the issue could be that I'm reading from usb HDD and sending data via wifi :(

Just out of interest I hooked up a Pi B to an RTL8188CUS Wifi and a USB HDD directly with no USB hub (The HDD was externally powered) and using SSH/SCP to my Ubuntu PC I was able to achieve ~3.0 MB/s both to and from the Pi. Samba is a lot more pain to set up especially with a Linux PC but I can't honestly see Samba being a whole lot slower than SSH. My setup is subject to the same 'iffy' USB setup and the slow Pi.
Don't judge Linux by the Pi.......

I'm in the same scenario: usb wifi dongle and usb hdd (external powered) attached directly to the rpi ports.
iffy?

I tried now from my ubuntu laptop, scp /rpi/folder /tmp/. and it transfer stuff at 60KByte/sec
