So I assume your Mac uses WiFi and you expect the Internet to flow though WiFi to the Mac and on through the cable to the Raspberry Pi?

I'm sure it is possible, but it definitely is not automatic. You will need some significant configuration work on the Mac and you may need to install software on it too.

"So I assume your Mac uses WiFi ....."

That's often the main problem isn't it, posters provide almost no information to enable people to help?

Anyway Jake, try this:

Go to the dock, open System pref's -> Sharing, setup the boxes as in my attached pic'. I'm posting this reply via that configuration, on a macbook, running 10.7.5

Plug it straight into the router ?

Then it is automatic. The way you're doing it is you need to turn the Mac into a router/wireless bridge.

If you want to use the Mac interfaces then you need to do two things

1. Bridge the ethernet that's wired to your RPi to you active gateway interface on your Mac
2. Pre-assign an IP address to your RPi (there's nothing automatic to do that). You'll need to edit the cmdline.txt file on the first (FAT) partition on your RPi SDCard and add ip=x.x.x.x to the end if the stuff in there.

I've never used a Mac (I've not used an Apple device since using an Apple ][e in high school) so you'll have to search on the interwebs for how to bridge networks (aka connection sharing).

...or spend £10 on a USB wireless dongle?
Pi2B Mini-PC/Media Centre: ARM=1GHz (+3), Core=500MHz, v3d=500MHz, h264=333MHz, RAM=DDR2-1200 (+6/+4/+4+schmoo). Sandisk Ultra HC-I 32GB microSD card on '50=100' OCed slot (42MB/s read) running Raspbian/KODI16, Seagate 3.5" 1.5TB HDD mass storage.
