PLEASE HELP URGENT

Wed Mar 05, 2014 4:24 am

I was using my Pi when i was wearing my fuzzy coat. Some static built up on me and when I turned around the static jumped from me to the Pi. It made a huge spark and the screen went blank! I moved the mouse and banged the keyboard and even tried to reboot but nothing happened! the lights still are on like normal and my network hub says the device is online but it does not seem to work...
is there any way I can salvage this one (Cant exactly afford a new one.) :!: :!: :!:

What type of screen? HDMI or Composite? Whichever one is broke try the other.
If only the video is damaged you might be able to connect and use the RPi from a remote computer using SSH (text console) or RDP (GUI).
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPiOS Buster w/ Desktop OS.

I was using the NTSC TV. But still it was working fine before i shocked the computer itself. I did not alter my setup, as the TV itself works.

Then try the HDMI on a monitor or newer TV.
Your only other other option, as I already mentioned, is to try and connect remotely from another computer to the RPi over your network.

You have two options.

End the thread and bin the RPi because you fried it and your thorough troubleshooting and diagnostic efforts have already brought you to this conclusion you are throwing the equivalent of a tantrum hoping a miracle will occur.

Or,

You can take a breath, calm down and follow the sage advice being offered. Its called the process of elimination. For example, you may have tripped fuses with could take between hours and days to reset. The RCA video port may have been damaged, leaving the HDMI port unharmed, which is why the question was raised.

The choice is yours, but your present course will prove unproductive.

Cheers.

Sorry to confuse you but I never said anything about a broken TV......
The RPi has 2 types of video outputs, HDMI and Composite (NTSC). If your burned the Composite output (ON THE RPi), then try the HDMI output using an HDMI monitor or TV with HDMI inputs.
If the HDMI and Composite both don't work then try to connect to the RPi remotely from another computer. If that does not work then bin the RPi.

Also here is some basic ESD info:
Handling Precautions:
The Raspberry Pi board has exposed circuitry and electronic components which are subject to irreparable damage or destruction by static electricity.

You don't have to see, hear or feel a Electro-Static Discharge (ESD). Damage can be done without knowing it.
Damage is not always instantaneous. ESD related failure can show up days or months later.
You must take anti static ESD precautions as you would with all exposed electronic circuits such as memory cards, motherboards, peripheral cards etc.

- Avoid carrying the RPi in your bare hands especially when walking across a carpeted floor. If you have to, then hold the board by the edges and discharge static from you body before setting the board down.
- When transporting use the anti static bag that came with your RPi. Never use a common 'zip lock' or other type of bag.
- Discharge static from your body by touching a grounded metal object before handling the RPi board.

Also do not allow metal objects to come into contact with a powered on RPi board, especially the GPIO pins

Never mind it mysteriously started working again...
