Red light, and "no signal"

Tue May 29, 2012 6:43 pm

Hi everyone, I'm Lee. I've been lurking here for a while, and I thought I had everything covered for when my RasPi arrived last week.

I've got a problem though. All I get when I power it up is a red power light, the TV/monitor says "no signal". I've tried two TV's, with both HDMI and RCA. I've tried two different power supplies with no joy too.

I'm assuming that the problem is either with the SD card - which is a PNY 8GB type 4 - or some problem with the image I installed on there with win32diskimager. I followed the instructions on the FAQ and I'm pretty sure its installed OK.

Can anyone tell me that when there is a problem with the image on the SD card that this is normal behaviour -- i.e. red light and no signal to the monitor or TV? I just need to know where to start troubleshooting this and the only things I havent got two of to eliminate is the SD card and the Pi.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Cheers, Lee

Try the trouble shooting page on the wiki. Hopefully that will give you some progress.

Ah thanks for that, got it now, I spent ages searching the forums but missed the Wiki. I'll try and have another go at re-installing the image to the card.

Just out of interest, is anyone using a PNY 8GB type 4 card and got it working, just so I know its not the card.

Hi Lee and others,

I'm having the same issue and have tried a couple of SD cards (although both are micro so using the same adapter which could be the issue I suppose)

All I get is the red power (pwr) light. No other lights so much as flash once.. is this expected behaviour if the image on the card or the card is bad/unsupported?

I tried powering up with no card and I get the same constant red pwr light nothing else, nothing on the display.

Help!

Kind regards,

Tom

I think this is what is to be expected, if the raspberry pi cant load from the sd card it will just stay dead, only red pwr light showing and no display. After ruling out power supply issues it seems quite a few people, myself included are experiencing problems getting the Raspberry pi to boot from certain SD cards. I have one out of 5 SD cards that I have tested that works, the rest not working at all even though one of them should be.

Its very fussy about what SD cards it likes, my advice looking back on the problems I've had is to make sure you get the power supply and SD card from RS/farnell at the same time you buy the raspberry pi to make sure it works.

Hi, thanks for your help with this. I followed the Wiki, bought a PNG 4GB SDHC card that was on the tested list, used flashnul to write the image and it worked fine.

Then I tried the same procedure with the original 8GB PNG card, and that worked as well.

Hi Lee,

Did you buy the card online? Can you link to it?

Tom

Hi Tom, I bought it from my local Ryman stationary shop.

Hi I have a rasbperry PI which has been in a drawer for a few months but I thought I should learn some coding
I have formatted the SD card and downloaded the NOOBS setup but I just cant get any output on the display and the red light does not turn green. Does this mean its faulty?

Cheers

No. The Red light is produced by a red LED. It indicates the presence of power to the system. It will never turn green.

Have you seen and tried this information about selecting a Display Mode with NOOBS.
