SD card corupted?

Sun Jan 26, 2014 1:15 pm

Yesterday I bought a raspberry pi because i wanted to get an advantage of programing. So I put the NOOBS lite on my sd card and installed the OS. I did it on my TV. Today I woke up and decided to run it on my computer screen. So I picked up a HDMI-DVI cable and on the screen green and red background appeared. To solve this, I connected my Raspberry Pi to the TV i first connceted to and then to my computer screen again. All worked well and I decided to change the resolution so I changed the config.txt to 1600x1200. I command "sudo restart" and after that the green and red background appears every time and the boot freezes to
"PANIC: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(179,2)
Entering kdb (current=0xcb846c80, pid 1) due to Keyboard Entry
kdb> _"
So I decided to format the SD card but my computer wont allow it. I tried to format the SD card from Ubuntu GParted without results. Did the same with CMD and on my macbook, still no result. Not even the recovery mode is working. I think my SD card may be corupted. What should I do now?

You could try reformatting it on a camera. They often have a simpler algorithm that can get around whatever is corrupted.

But you might just have to bin it. I don't understand why this happened though. So far as I can see, you did not do anything wrong.

Formatted on my camera. Still nothing. How do I bin it?

I think the bin it was meant literally. The SD card may be dead. Although how I don't know.

PMSL. "Bin" can mean a lot of things, many related to computing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BIN.

In this context it means trash, although as the others have noted I don't know why or how your card have ended up as suitable only for the bin.

Sorry, didn't understand it. Well, I have tried everything. And it only shows like 150 mb space, even if it's a 4 gb card.

That's because the first partition is a 150MB and Windows Explorer cannot see further partitions stored on the card.
To reclaim your lost space you can use the SDFormatter tool - https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/ with "format size adjustment" enabled.

When i try to format, it says that my sd card is write-protected even if I dont have locked it with the plug.

That's odd, what SD card reader are you using??

Do you have another card reader to try instead??

Its a micro SD card with an adapter. I have tried on different computers and even put the micro sd card into a usb adapter. Still the same. It's SanDisk so shouldn't make any problems.

If you haven't enabled the write protect switch on the SD card adapter then it's looking likely the card has gone bad.

There is an internal write-protect flag that can get set on the card which prevents any writes. I believe gsh mentioned it once. I think he said it can be cleared but I don't know how to do that.

I did once find a card that had the temporary write protect bit set, I think it may be used by camera's because the guy who found the problem was playing around with it in his camera as well...

Unfortunately I was unable to un-write protect it (didn't have the time to do it... Too much other stuff in the bag)

It seems you have something of a catch22 situation: the card is write protect because of a faulty bit but cannot fix it because the card write protected. :)

Just out curiosity is the label on your SD card damaged or has an indentation in the top right corner (opposite to the side slider switch) ??

the card isn't damaged, if you are asking for that.
