USB Hub - "freezing pi"

Sat May 26, 2012 7:14 pm

I have the latest debian I could download yesterday and latest kernel according to rpi-update.

I thought I had to get an external powered usb hub since my wired apple keyboard didn't work yesterday. Now the keyboard works fine. Except that it more or less freezes the pi all together.

If I enter a command I can see what I enter directly, but the respond doesn't happen at all, or extremely slow. Like logging in didn't seem to work unless I unplugged the usb hub and then everything went back to normal, except no keyboard of course.

It's a Belkin 7 slot usb-hub. I only have the Apple keyboard plugged in and the psu.

Tried different chargers, all 5V 1A and different cables before I started trying out the usb hub and they didn't work at all. So removing the hub isn't a good option. Well, unless it can't be fixed.

Edit: During boot and plugged in it doesn't seem to get an ip-adress. Plugging it in after it get's an ip adress just returns could not resolve hostname.

Add ons:
I have now also tried a 2A 5V charger. Both with and without the hub with the keyboard. Same problem there.

Another add: It worked with another keyboard and powered from my computer earlier today at work. But seeing that I'm now home I need it to work here too. Any help is appreciated.

USB hub:

Bit weird since the 4 port similar one seems to work for other users. Let's see if I can return the 7port one later today.

Is this hub the one where you can unjack a 4 port unpowered hub from the top (silver)?
I had this, but works ok if 4 port unplugged.

I'm afraid it's not.

You really need to be using a powered hub.
I find using two USB ports (usually mouse and USB keydrive) is the limit.
So in effect going above 3 USB ports (by adding an unpowered hub) is not possible. For me the error was keyboard auto repeat.

Guess it's the same problem as the "Cerulian 10 Port USB 2.0 Top Loading Hub with 2A supply (kills mouse and network port)"

http://elinux.org/RPi_VerifiedPeriphera ... d_USB_Hubs

Thought the belkin one would be good. However, the sluggishness isn't mentioned in the problematic USB hubs.
