Ralink RT5370 Refuses to Work

Thu Jan 02, 2014 8:01 am

I have a Ralink RT5370 USB dongle that just will not work with my Raspberry Pi model B (running the latest Raspbian). I've wasted hours on random tutorials trying to get this thing working.

First off, it's not a hardware problem. I've got the Pi on a 1A Apple iPhone power supply. The Ralink dongle shows up fine in lsusb. By default, before I started messing with this thing, it was loading a driver for it (as shown by lsmod) that seemed to be corrupted and wasn't working.

Doing

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install drivers-ralink
does not fix it. People have said to go to http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/no ... e-nonfree/ and download the latest Ralink drivers then install them – no luck. I tried firmware-ralink_0.40_all.deb and firmware-ralink_0.40~bpo70+1_all.deb.

The wifi config application on the desktop doesn't see the device, and sudo ifup wlan0 gets an error saying that there is no such device.

Does anyone have this working on the latest Raspbian?

Some people have.

Do you get dmesg messages like?

Code: Select all

ieee80211 phy1: rt2x00_set_rt: Info - RT chipset 5390, rev 0502 detected
ieee80211 phy1: rt2800_init_eeprom: Error - Invalid RF chipset 0x3070 detected
ieee80211 phy1: rt2x00lib_probe_dev: Error - Failed to allocate device
usbcore: registered new interface driver rt2800usb
If so unless you are prepared to patch and recompile the kernel I'd cut your losses and buy another dongle.

I'm pretty sure I never got those messages, but I'll have to go back and try to reproduce those on my system. At this point it's not loading any driver at all even though I installed them, so I'm just going to reinstall since I might have messed something else up.

The dongle itself should be fine since it works on my brother's Mac and Windows machines.

Those dongles are fine but they are not currently supported by Linux out of the box. I think the problem is that some variants misreport what they are.
