Cannot log in because of keyboard repeats

Tue Dec 31, 2013 9:10 pm

I just got my RsPI to boot but I absolutely cannot log in because when I type a key it usually repeats
several times.
And Linux in its infinite wisdom doesn't display ANYTHING in the password field making it totally impossible to figure out if it screwed up or not.

Here is the disk image I am using: http://www.linuxsystems.it/raspbian-whe ... mal-image/

I am using an HDMI to DVI cable but I don't think that will affect it.

the keyboard is a microsoft natural ergonomic keyboard (its the only USB one I know of)
but it works on my computer

I already tried dwc_otg.speed=1 and it did nothing

Please help - its really frustrating

It is highly likely that keyboard needs more power than the Pi can supply. You really want a very basic USB keyboard with no extra functions.

+1 (I usually say "cheap & cheerful wired variety)
Your PSU should be spec'd at something like 5V 1000mA and have a good quality connecting cable. Check the voltage between testpoints TP1 & TP2 (marked as such on the PCB) - it should be >4.75V esp. when your keyboard is plugged in.
Trev.
Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

Thanks for the replies

The keyboard is rated for 120mA - USB spec allows 500...

Yes the PSU is 5v 1A
The voltage between TP1 and TP2 with the keyboard attached is 4.89V

W.r.t. keyboard spec. - 120mA is a "little on the high side" (most of those I've used are reported via lsusb & usb-devices as using <100mA). Does it appear here: http://elinux.org/RPi_USB_Keyboards (as O.K.)? (Although the USB spec.allows for "high power" ports at 500mA, the Pi's ports are rated as "low power" ie. 100mA - largely due to the limited "headroom" of the main polyfuse)
The testpoint voltage appears good, so I'm guessing you have an "incompatible" keyboard. (See also this "sticky" thread w.r.t. "non-working" USB devices: http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... 28&t=53832 )

Would it be possible for a wireless keyboard/mouse combo to work within the NOOBS installation process, but cause a kernel panic once Raspbian had been installed?

meh that is disappointing about the power limit. Anyway it does appear in the "working" list
but obviously it does not work - I will have to go to the thrift store and look for another USB kbd

I also tried it through a powered USB hub with exactly the same result
