raspistill preview resolution not correct?

Wed Dec 18, 2013 9:01 pm

Hi,

I have a strange problem with the raspberry pi camera and raspistill. I have a rpi with the camera module connected to an 1920x1080 monitor. It boots up in the correct resolution.

When I run the following command on the conole:

raspistill -ex auto -awb auto -w 1920 -h 1080 -p '0,0,1920,1080' -v -o test.jpg

The camera preview seems to be "zoomed in" and the actual capture resolution of 1920x1080 is only shown for a brief moment when the actual screen capture happens. I noticed that when I run the command above replacing -p '0,0,1920,1080' with -fp the same thing happens but the output of raspistill shows " Preview window 0,0,1024,768" instead of " Preview window 0,0,1920,1080". I am confused.

Any ideas?

Below is the output of raspistill:

Yes, it's a known bug - the video preview mode runs at a different resolution to the full stills capture mode. I need to generate a new mode that enables full field of view video at 30fps but I haven't had time.

Ok, if you can point me to the general area of the relevant code in raspistill.c I may have some time to take a look...

It's not a bug in the app, it needs a new mode in the GPU camera driver to handle full frame 30fps. I tried one the other day but it didn't work - need some tech help from my boss when he's not too busy.

Ahhh... ok. Will it display the proper preview resolution at 15fps? Is there a way to force it to that frame rate?

There is the full preview mode which should do that but the last time I tried it it didn't do what I expected. Give it a go...

The full preview mode doesn't work either (behaves the same) as I described in my original post. Am I using it wrong? The command I used was posted also.

Any progress on this issue? If there is any way I can help implementing a proper video mode to enable the preview match the actual capture resolution I am willing... Thanks!

Still working on in when we can. Busy at the moment though of actual work. I'll check with the boss to see if he has made any progress.

Not much others can do I'm afraid.

Hey guys

I'm running into the exact same problem, when does this get fixed? With the resolution 720p the preview and the picture match perfectly on a full hd tv

Thank you for the soon answer :)

Not sure when this will be fixed. The RPF are taking on some more people soon to work on this sort of stuff. Is this reported in the github repo?

In order to keep track of what needs to be fixed, the github repo has a bug tracker, which is used by the RPF to keep track of everything that needs doing.

https://github.com/raspberrypi/userland/issues

Check to see if bug is already there, if not, you can easily add a new one, give as much detail as possible to make it easier to diagnose.

I've just commented on github.
Not a userland or firmware issue, but due to the way PiCamera sets up the pipeline. I believe it was addressed in a recent update but can't see the relevant docs.
