USB and Ethernet periodic failure

Fri Dec 06, 2013 10:21 am

Hi

A have a PI running 24/7 on a remote location only with SSH access and a good friend who can unplug and plug the power cable... ;)
From time to time it appears that the Ethernet connection on the Pi dies and maybe also the USB.

A have a big psu connected with more than enough amps and the cpu usage is very low ( around 0.05 ).
The system was running stable for the first 14 days, but after a power outage the errors began to show up.

Since I'm not much a hardware guy I would like to hear in which log to look for some hints on what actually goes down ( if it's the bus, the Ethernet connection or the Pi ) and also what to look for in the log ?

Thank you in advance.

I would suspect a power issue. Even with a good supply, if the USB cable itself is rubbish, you can get exactly this (as I did)

To check this, you need to measure the voltage between tp1 and tp2 when the device is under load.

Hi jamesh

Thank you for the reply.

I don't think it's a usb-cable issue since I have been replacing both the psu and the cable when the problems started. I'm actually backpowering the Pi through the USB-ports at the moment... still with the same result.

Do you have a USB hub connected to the Pi? I have a similar problem and it seems that the USB hub is causing the Ethernet connection and USB connections to crash.

No USB hub, just a USB male->female cable with power insertion.

Hi

Just a update.

It's not just the ethernet/usb-bus that dies. I had a cronjob running every five minutes and it also stops, so I assume it's the PI that crashes ?
I just wrote the sd-card with a imagebackup from back when I wasn't having any problems, and will see if this changes anything.
