The current driver for 3.12.29+ #714 also works with 3.12.29+ #715. I have updated the list in the first post to include #715.

Back online, yes, provided my laptop keeps working. It's playing up real badly and it's the only way I can talk to my Pi as I can only use it headless.

Back in the UK, not quite yet. Should be back in about 10 days. In the meantime I will try my hardest to keep the driver updated as necessary.

I am having problems loading the 8188eu module into kernel
3.12.26+ #7
which came with Adafruit Easy Install Image ( https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-pit ... sy-install ) for the PiTFT.

I have tried with
3.12.26+ #702, #703 - 8188eu-20140705.tar.gz
but I get the following error:
sudo modprobe 8188eu
could not insert '8188eu': Exec format error
Any suggestion what to do to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance

Hi Boing,

You need a driver compiled for the Adafruit kernel as the configuration is slightly different to the standard raspbian kernel. I can probably do it but getting the configuration right could be an issue.

There should be a file /proc/config.gz. Is it possible you can post it somewhere so I can download it? This should define the configuration used.

Hi MrEngman,

You may grab the Adafruit config file here: DELETED

Thank you, but can I?

I don't know that web site but as far as I'm concerned it's a load of crap. My laptop has been loaded with a load of viruses and other rubbish and no sign of config.gz being downloaded.

If you can provide a direct link to config.gz I might try it, otherwise I shall see what I can do here but whether the driver will work I can't guarantee.

Hi Mr Engman,

I have just downloaded the file - it looks fine to me. Of course you are right, you will get annoying popups and rubbish...:(

Second try - it is now on my own webserver waiting for you (no popups etc.) : http://www.mouseworx.de/files/rpi/config.gz

Thank you!

OK, that's much better. With the other site I wasn't getting popups but several programs installed themselves and my virus scanner blocked reported about a dozen viruses of one sort or another.

I will see what I can do with the driver but it will need the kernel compiling and that takes time on the RPi. Wil get back to you when done.

Hi everyone,

A new driver is now available for raspbian 3.12.30+ #717. Check out the driver list at http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewt ... 82#p462982 for the driver and install details.

Would be great to be able to download the updated driver via script prior to updating and breaking the old driver. Any ideas?

Just a simple menu that offers kernel choice and download the appropriate file.

Hi ajacker,

I did look into this quite sometime ago but my scripting skills are pretty much non-existent so didn't get very far with it. And I found a problem with searching in github that didn't help either.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with github etc but there is a file in https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware/extra, uname_string, that includes the kernel version and build number for the kernel being installed. What would be really helpful is if uname_string was included in the firmware updates in https://github.com/Hexxeh/rpi-firmware then it would probably be fairly simple to determine if a driver was available as this would give the kernel version and build number for the kernel being installed. e.g. 3.12.30+ and #717 for the latest update. I should then be possible to mod LaFambe's script to see if a driver is available before running rpi-update.

Currently only git_hash, the kernel commit id, is included in https://github.com/Hexxeh/rpi-firmware. One would then need to use this to search https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware to find the firmware version compatible with https://github.com/Hexxeh/rpi-firmware and extract uname_string to get the kernel version and build. You could then check for a driver. If it exists run rpi-update and then update the driver before rebooting and this should keep your wifi up and running.

I seem to remember that sometime back I suggested that uname_string be included in https://github.com/Hexxeh/rpi-firmware but nothing came of it.

It is also possible to load an older version of kernel to revert to a previous version using rpi-update commit-id but then attempting to search for the equivalent firmware version and uname_string fails so it is not possible to find the kernel version and build to determine the right driver to load.

It is possible to check and update manually, OK a bit of a pain but will keep your wifi up and running after using rpi-update. First check https://github.com/Hexxeh/rpi-firmware to see if an update is available. Then check https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware for the equivalent firmware revision and check extra/uname_string for firmware version and build. Check the driver list for an available driver. If there is one run rpi-update but don't reboot then download and install the driver using the new kernel version in the install commands and then reboot. Something like this which I use.

Code: Select all

rpi-update
wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80256631/8188eu-20xxyyzz.tar.gz
tar -xzf 8188eu-20xxyyzz.tar.gz
sudo install -p -m 644 8188eu.ko /lib/modules/"new_kernel_version"/kernel/drivers/net/wireless
sudo depmod "new_kernel_version"
sudo reboot
Note: If the new kernel version is different to the currently running kernel but uses the same driver you will need to re-install the driver as the new kernel version will load the driver from a different directory than the current kernel.

Hi boing,

Sorry for the delay in getting back. Unfortunately trying to compile the drive for Adafruit is proving fruitless

It would appear that the Adafruit kernel may include some additional code as well as the LCD driver. Running the menuconfig using the .config file from the Adafruit image when compiling the kernel appears to have some items missing. There are some references in the .config file but no descriptions or options to enable or disable them, so I think the relevant code is absent. And like many sites the instructions are pretty useless or out of date. A rather annoying thing is that the Adafruit image includes a couple of symbolic links to the source code but the source they point to does not exist as it's not included in the image.

I'm trying to find what the issue is but don't hold your breath waiting for a working driver.

Hi MrEngman,

thank you for getting back to my problem. In the meantime I gave the manual installation a try on a fresh image with a working 8188eu driver but it ended up the same - the PiTFT is fine but the TP-Link dongle is dead after rebooting. It seems that there are a few other people having these difficulties with the TP-Link WN725N V2 driver and the Adafruit Easy Install Image / PiTFT Driver.

Is it ok to you to link this topic in the Adafruit Forum? https://forums.adafruit.com/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=53402 seems to be the right place. Maybe this is a way to find the missing sources for compiling the driver against the adafruit image.

That is exactly the sh I was after. Works if you know what the Kernel is going to be and therefore the driver version. Thank you.

Hi

I took a look at the Adafruit Forum and I'm not impressed. I tried loading source using notro's script and ended up with a 3.6.11+ source which was a lot of help :o I don't know what he does to compile the code but his scripts don't help.

Anyway I'll keep trying to sort out the driver as there are obviously quite a few people in the same situation as yourself and it will be good to get the driver working on the latest Adafruit code.

Hi Mr. Engman -

I'm trying to replicate your work in building from source so that I can debug some potential issues regarding Wifi P2P within the rtl8188eu driver.

When I clone lwfinger's github, the driver version is reported as v4.1.4_6773.20130222.

Using your uploaded 8188eu.ko, the driver version is reported as v4.1.8_9499.20131104.

Where can i find this 4.1.8 source code for the rtl8188eu driver? When I compile v4.1.4, I cannot enable Wifi P2P. I can enable P2P with 4.1.8, but am unable to change the debug level for logging. I would like to be able to build the 4.1.8 version so that I can change its logging behavior.

Hi timegg,

I downloaded the driver from here http://lazyzhu.com/file/RTL8188EUS_RTL8 ... 131104.zip.

There are some minor mods required to get it working with the Raspberry Pi and I have made a patch file which is available here https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/802 ... 8eus.patch. It includes a mod to get it working and some addition changes to add several new devices, to get the LED flashing when the wifi is connected and stop it generating some debug output which I didn't need.

There is also a version of hostapd available in the source and you may need to compile and use that one instead of the version included by default in the raspberrypi image to get p2p working. I think there is documentation included regarding p2p so that should help you.

Hi,

I've finally managed to compile a driver that loads in the latest Adafruit PiTFT, 3.12.26+ #7, available here on AdaFruits web site and it appears to work OK.

You can download the WN725n driver from here and install it using the instructions in the OP.
