Hi! I'm using TL-WN725N V2 dongle, trying direct connection to my phone (Yotaphone2 or LG Nexus 5), I can see phone, can connect to it. But if I try another way (connect to dongle from phone), phone unable to find any p2p device around it (using iwpriv wlan0 p2p_set enable=1). Can you help me? Also I want to make working piracast, my phone doesn't see Piracast device (phone can see it only if I emulate connecting by editing python scripts, but can't connect).

Ignore last post,

Not 100% sure but i dont think that was the issue.

I am running 4.4.17+ #904 , on a Pi B+

Need to create a Wifi access point, i have managed to get the AP to show up on my phone, and it prompts for Password, but then gets stuck in a loop and wont connect.

Any help would be appreciated , not sure what the problem is or what the solution would be.

Hi MrEngman,
I'm involved in a Open Source Copter project where we use a RaspPi Zero as basis for the flight control communication between a Smartphone application and the flight controller in the Copter. The Zero is setting up an AP where the user logs in with his Smartphone and then steers the Copter via an Android App.
One safety feature in the app is a constant analysis of the signal strength of the respective user - if it drops below a certain quality level the Copter stops automatically. Currently the signal strength is analyzed via the iw command, which unfortunately does not support non kernel drivers.
Do you happen to know alternative commands to iw that can be used to read the signal strength of devices connected to the WLAN stick acting as an AP and that are working with your driver?
Thanks a ton for your immense work.
Greetings, Benjamin

There's command iwconfig but don't know if that gives you the info you need. And maybe sudo iwlist wlano scan. Not sure as you are running your wifi as an AP if these will give the info you want.

Hi,
I've updated kernel, but i can't find right driver.
This is the message:
./install-wifi -c 8812au rpi-update

Your current kernel revision = 4.4.20+
Your current kernel build = #908

Please wait ... checking the kernel revision and build you will have after running command 'sudo rpi-update'.

Running command 'sudo rpi-update' will load:

kernel revision = 4.4.20+
kernel build = #909

Checking for a new 8812au wifi driver module if you run command 'sudo rpi-update'.
A driver does not yet exist for this update.

You will need to reboot your Pi. The driver you downloaded and installed requires some additional modules being loaded and these will be loaded when you reboot.

You were trying to load the 8812au module originally. Why were you trying to load that driver? Do you have more than one wifi connected to your Pi?

Raspbian already has a driver for the 8188eu wifi modules so now my 8188eu driver is loaded it will disable the driver included with the OS. To use the driver included with raspbian you will need to delete my driver using commands

Code: Select all

sudo rm /lib/modules/4.4.20+/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/8188eu.ko
sudo depmod -a
and edit the file /etc/modprobe.d/8188eu.conf and comment out the line blacklist r8188eu to re-enable the built in driver and then reboot.

If you do need to install the 8812au driver you can use the command ./install-wifi 8812au. This may give the error

Code: Select all

Error: could not insert module 8812au.ko: Unknown symbol in module
. You should then reboot as the wifi driver will need extra modules being loaded.

I have just updated the script to avoid the error you were seeing "Unknown symbol in module" so if the driver relies on additional modules running they will be loaded. You can download the new version using

Code: Select all

wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80256631/install-wifi.tar.gz
tar xzf install-wifi.tar.gz
.

Hi,

I have an issue to get 8188eu driver working on a rpi0 with latest Raspian Jessy lite image.
My setup works with kernel's r8188eu driver, but wanted to give 8188eu a shot for various reasons.
So I just installed 8188eu using latest install-wifi script on the working setup.

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ uname -a
Linux raspberrypi 4.4.23+ #913 Tue Oct 4 13:56:56 BST 2016 armv6l GNU/Linux

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ lsmod
Module Size Used by
8188eu 931354 0
cfg80211 499234 1 8188eu
rfkill 21397 2 cfg80211

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ cat /etc/network/interfaces
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet dhcp

allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet manual
wpa-roam /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
iface default inet dhcp
and wpa_supplicant.conf with proper SSID/pass (working with base driver)

result with 8188eu:

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ iwconfig
wlan0 unassociated Nickname:"<WIFI@REALTEK>"
          Mode:Managed Frequency=2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
          Sensitivity:0/0
          Retry:off RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0 No scan results
rpi0 device has not been moved from the network conditions it was in with original driver (detected 5 SSID)
Going back, soleley removing 8188eu driver:

Code: Select all

sudo rm /lib/modules/4.4.23+/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/8188eu.ko
sudo depmod -a
sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/8188eu.conf
and reboot restores normal wifi operation.

Thanks for any help/suggestion to get 8188eu up and running.

Hi macmpi,

I'm running the 8188eu driver and TP-Link WN725n wifi on my Pi Zero with Raspbian jessie lite 4.4.23+ #913. No problems at all.

I created a new SD card using the 2016-09-23-raspbian-jessie-lite image. I then copied the file /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf from another Pi to the new card using a USB to SD card reader to configure the wifi and then booted the new card on the Pi Zero. The wifi was running OK using the built in r8188eu driver with kernel version 4.4.21+ #911.

I then installed rpi-update and updated the kernel to 4.4.23+ #913 and then rebooted and then downloaded the wifi install script and installed the 8188eu driver, rebooted again and it is running without any problems.

You say you are using the jessie lite image but your file /etc/network/interfaces is of the format used with raspbian wheezy. Did you edit this file or did you update your SD card from a wheezy image? If you edited the file I would suggest you put it back to it's default state.

Hi MrEngman,

Thanks for your quick reply.
I took the same steps to build my rpi0 setup.
It's true I did edit /etc/network/interfaces in doing several trials & errors.
I followed your suggestion and restored the original one, as below

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ cat /etc/network/interfaces.orig
# interfaces(5) file used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8)

# Please note that this file is written to be used with dhcpcd
# For static IP, consult /etc/dhcpcd.conf and 'man dhcpcd.conf'

# Include files from /etc/network/interfaces.d:
source-directory /etc/network/interfaces.d

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet manual

allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet manual
    wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

allow-hotplug wlan1
iface wlan1 inet manual
    wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
Baseline driver works, and then re-installed yours:

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ ./install-wifi

Your current kernel revision = 4.4.23+
Your current kernel build = #913

Checking for a wifi module to determine the driver to install.

Your wifi module is Bus 001 Device 007: ID 0bda:8179 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.

And it uses the 8188eu driver.

Checking for a new 8188eu wifi driver module for your current kernel.
There is a driver module available for this kernel revision.
Downloading the 8188eu driver.
Installing the 8188eu driver.

A version of the driver 8188eu.ko is already loaded and running. You will need to reboot to load the new driver.
and same problem (no scan, no connection to AP).
Really puzzling...

PS: my rpi0 is first generation, in case that matters...

noticed that:

My dongle is plugged through a powered USB hub in case that matters (this hub also has a usefull usb-ethernet adapter and keyboard to debug): again literally same setup with base driver.

I see the same in dmesg except for the last line you show. Not sure what that means.

I have the wifi module connected directly to my Pi Zero and connect to my Pi using SSH. No other devices connected to the Pi.

I have seen some strange things happen sometimes with wifi modules. I had one connected to a Pi using a hub and I could not get a connection. I then change the USB port the wifi was plugged in to and then it started working. This was a long time ago but it was very strange behaviour. I then plugged it back in to the USB port it was originally connected to when it did not work and then it continued to work OK. Really weird. I never did manage to figure out why it didn't work to start with.

Maybe change the USB port it is plugged in to and see if that makes a difference.

I have seen an issue with a hub where some of the ports had limited current capability so if a device was connected that consumed more current than the hub's port would allow it would disable the device connected to it. Doesn't explain why the wifi works with the r8188eu driver and not my 8188eu driver though.

Googling "RTL871X: rtw_cmd_thread: DriverStopped(0) SurpriseRemoved(1) break at line 478" comes up with a few similar errors but no answer why as far as I can tell.

Indeed...looks like there's still room for magic in computing.

With that cleared, I'll move to playing with hostapd, and check if it may work with baseline version now...

Hi macmpi,

Good to hear your wifi is now working. Don't know about wifi working on PC's using Linux but on the Pi wifi can certain behave really weirdly at times.

Have fun, especially if you're going to try hostapd.
