Raspi won't boot after apt-get upgrade

Sun May 13, 2012 10:11 am

Did an aptitude full-upgrade today and there was a lot of updated packages available for Debian Sqeeze (I think it was 17 or something similar). Accepted them and did a reboot.

Now I can't access the raspi. It's not responding to ping nor ssh anymore. I'm not the road (or train actually) so I can not turn on the screen to see what the trouble is.

You are hereby warned, don't perform upgrades of OS via ssh when you cannot trouble shoot locally.

Just out of curiosity, what is your experience(s) with apt-get upgrade (in the past) ?

I ask, because the one (and only!) time I did "apt-get upgrade", it hosed my system as well (*). So, I never did it again.

I think if your system isn't absolutely bog-standard (as the Pi isn't nor was mine in the incident referred to above), it isn't safe.

(*) I.e., the only thing to do was to re-install Linux.
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

(One of the best lines I've seen on this board lately)

I think this is the first time I've seen any updated packages for the Debian-19-04-2012 image. If doing an upgrade is not safe I hope they would state so on the download page. Lot's of people going to get their systems hosed now if that is a real problem.

An update: I was back home yesterday and my poor PI had been frozen for over 24 hours. I just turned it off and back on and it started working again.

Don't know what it was "stuck on" on the first boot after update since it's running headless. But at least it's working again now.
