mpd mpc - BBC radio internet streams stopped

Sun Jul 21, 2013 7:46 am

I built an internet radio using mpd and mpc and it's been working fine the last six months for BBC Radio 2 etc. It uses the BBC internet radio streams contained in the r*_aaclca.pls files. 3 or 4 days ago the BBC streams stopped working. I can still use Classic FM without problem.
mpc reports 'Error decoding stream'.

Here is the playlist for BBC Radio 2:
"http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r2_aaclca.pls"
I use a script which parses this to a .m3u file for mpc/mpd to play.

Does anyone else have the same problem? Has the BBC changed something? I cannot find any problem in my internet radio scripts - they are all working correctly as originally I believe.

Thanks!

Yep, I have had the same issue for the past couple of days. However I got BBC Radio 2 working again using this link -

mpc add mms://wmlive-nonacl.bbc.net.uk/wms/bbc_ami/radio2/radio2_bb_live_int_ep1_sl0?BBC-UID=f46f647ff3cc7de3e26f165f31b9eb75a80739b200b021fe20eb8e7d5504565e

I am not sure what they have done with the m2u streams.

Thanks for the info. I just turned the radio on again this evening and it's working again! I guess the BBC must have sorted out the problem. It's amazing how important receiving BBC is when you're living abroad...

BBC like to dynamically change their feeds...so i generated a script (with some interweb help) that updates them every time i start up the pi:
bbcpls_class.zip
(1.78 KiB) Downloaded 762 times
There is a standalone script or a class if it helps...

Sure there are tidier ways, but this was at the limit of my coding and it works every time!

I've made a variation of your script - it's slightly more python centric, and creates a new playlist for each of the radio stations as that seems to work better for me (I can add each station individually rather than all at once).

Code: Select all

import requests

plsdir = "/home/music/playlists/"       #set the directory

#list the BBC pls files here:
stations = {
    'BBC1'      : 'http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r1_aaclca.pls',
    'BBC2'      : 'http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r2_aaclca.pls',
    'BBC3'      : 'http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r3_aaclca.pls',
    'BBC4'      : 'http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r4_aaclca.pls',
    'BBC4Extra' : 'http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r4x_aaclca.pls',
    'BBC5LiveSX': 'http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r5lsp_aaclca.pls',
    'BBC6Music' : 'http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r6_aaclca.pls',
}

def fetch_stream(url):
    #what we're looking for
    search='File1='
    r = requests.get(url)
    if r.status_code == 200:
        for line in r.text.splitlines():
            if search in line:
                return line.lstrip(search)

#file = open (plsdir + "bbc.pls", "w+") #opens the file, +w creates it if it doesn't exist
for (name,url) in stations.iteritems():
    file = open(plsdir + name + '.m3u','w+')
    file.write('#EXTM3U\n')
    file.write('\n')
    file.write('#EXTINF:-1, %s\n' % name)
    file.write(fetch_stream(url) + '\n')
    file.close()

Hi all,

I've made additional modifications to the script found here and ones found elsewhere to get the BBC streams. The main feature is placing the streams in a single playlist making everything work a bit better with the MPoD app on my iPhone. You just open the app, and select the stream you want and it just works...

This script can be made to run periodically as a cron job so the stream URLs are kept up to date.

For details: http://www.tristancollins.me/computing/ ... t-for-mpd/

For the script: https://gist.github.com/tristancollins/ ... b64f71ab24

Hope this helps someone.

The BBC stream URLs have altered again. I've updated my script here: http://www.tristancollins.me/computing/ ... t-for-mpd/

For reference the new ones are:

Code: Select all

Hi Tristan,

thanks for the info - I wondered why my BBC international streams stopped working in Germany yesterday...
I'll update my RPi internet radio scripts to something valid shortly.
Cheers,
Steven

UPDATE 6/10/2014
Just pasted your new stream addresses into my script and my radio is working again! Great!!! :D
They work Ok in Germany. I did not need to use any other settings for international?

FYI - something changed on the BBC side again today.

I've updated my script to function again:

1) returned the addresses to the generic .pls files as before
2) changed from curl to wget

Things now work again.

I've got a similar solution for this which also keeps the URLs up to date. It also has a simple command line interface (so you can just type e.g. "radio bbc4" or "radio 6") and a nice web interface if you want to use it.

Blog about the web interface: http://blog.scphillips.com/2014/12/bbc- ... eb-server/

Blog about the radio scripts: http://blog.scphillips.com/2014/05/bbc- ... rry-pi-v2/

Github repository with it all in: https://github.com/scp93ch/raspberry-radio

Hi All. The BBC international (and national too?) streaming links are changing. Radio 2 does not work from Germany with my MPD player since a couple of days. On the BBC website they mention they are stopping WMA and moving to AAC only. However MP3 will be supported for year or two apparently.

I was using links like this one for Radio 2:
"http://open.live.bbc.co.uk/mediaselecto ... at/pls.pls"

Does anyone know the new URL addresses of the BBC international streams for BBC Radio 2, 4, 6 Music etc ?

I am hoping my MPD works ok with AAC, otherwise that will my next challenge :)

Cheers, Steven

Hi,

The mp3 and aac playlists are listed here:
I've had luck with the mp3 streams, for example:

Code: Select all

$ curl http://www.listenlive.eu/bbc6music.m3u
http://bbcmedia.ic.llnwd.net/stream/bbcmedia_6music_mf_p

Hi All. I edited my script to the following URLs and all is hunky-dory now.. :lol: (I was getting a bit fed up with listening to Classic FM all the time :mrgreen: ... great to have Radio 2 back!)

Works fine with MPC/MPD at 128kbps MP3.
Cheers, Steven,

radios["BBC Radio 2"]="http://www.radiofeeds.co.uk/bbcradio2.pls"

radios["BBC Radio 4"]="http://www.radiofeeds.co.uk/bbcradio4fm.pls"

radios["BBC 6 Music"]="http://www.radiofeeds.co.uk/bbc6music.pls"
