How do I fix screen resolution in Debian squeeze?

I have tried two different tv's with my raspberry pi. But the screen is cut off on all 4 sides. I can barely see the task bar on the bottom, and cannot see the top of the screen to close windows. THe screen resolution seems to be fixed and I cannot change It.

*I have used HDMI, and RCA connections1

disable_overscan=1 to go back to no-overscan scheme in /boot/config.txt

aha, that would be lesson #2... "you can never have too many SD cards"

You're lucky the RPi does not use a micro SD card. They're impossible to find on a workbench.

We have a lot of phone prototypes knocking around here, and I am ALWAYS leaving uSD cards in them when they move from person to person, so always getting lost.

One the other hand, just opened the back of one phone and found a 16GB uSD in it. So what goes around, comes around.

then you need to create it - at /boot/config.txt - it doesn't have to exist but when it does, it contains directives that impact all sorts of raspi stuff

I am also having a problem with resolution. I tried editing the config.txt file, thought I read soneone had placed it in their windows machine to edit it, but I do not see any folders or directories in windows, does this create the file structure from an image each time you boot?

I tried using nano:

sudo nano /boot/config.txt

I add the line:

disable_overscan=1

every time I do that it says it is creating a new file.

I tried using sudo sh -c "disable_overscan=1 >> /boot/config.txt"

and it does nothing for several minutes, I reboot and no change...:-(

I'm having a similar issue with Arch Linux. Also, what's the native LXDE desktop resolution supposed to be? I was under the impression that it would offer resolutions supported by my TV (1080p). Currently it's much less than that with no option to change it.

@Freakster

Is your resolution okay in debian?

Are you using latest Arch image? (29-04).

I think an earlier version had a problem where the resolution was limited to 800x480.

Hi,

I'm literally just re-flashing my SD card with Debian. It corrupted somehow & wouldn't let me load LXDE... (just blank-screened). When I'm done & it's all up & running I'll post back. I was using the latest versions of both Arch (29-04) & Debian (19-04). With Arch I was missing the screen edges too. next time my image messes up I'll try the overscan fix in the /boot/config.txt on that one.

I have the same problem! Complete noob to debian so I don't really know what I'm doing and have no idea how to set the resolution.

Tried adding a config.txt to /boot/ and adding the line disable_overscan=1 but it just made the problem worse and I had to delete the file and reboot.

Can anyone offer me any solutions? Using the Pi on an old CRT tv atm and whatever video mode I have the tv set to I always havea  couple of inches chopped off.

Thanks in advance if anyone can help :/

I torrented 19-04 from raspberrypi.org/downloads

Edit: apologies, this was designed more to help with HDMI, not old CRT, but you may find the overscan bits still helpful, and this post may help others with display issues...

I had good success by doing the following… I went to http://www.raspberrypi.org/for.....mt-formats and compared with my monitor (in my example my monitor native res is 1680x1050@60hz).

So from that list, I saw my desired config as…

hdmi_group=2

hdmi_mode=0x3a

I also added disable_overscan=1

If you need to tweak further the horizontal/vertical adjustment, try adding the lines..

overscan_left=16

overscan_right=-16

overscan_top=16

overscan_bottom=-16

disable_overscan=0

Play around with those figures.

If you are having problems editing, because you can't see the screen for example. Put the sdcard in another PC, mount it, go to the /boot folder and create a file called config.txt with the above bits in (with your bits swapped in instead of mine).

Reboot

Hope that makes sense!

I'm just re-flashing my SD-card again... lost track of how many times I've done it now. This time I've created a config.txt file containing:hdmi_group=1
hdmi_mode=20
disable_overscan=1Hopefully this should convey to a 1080i 50Hz TV. The next challenge will be in working out how to overclock it sto 800MHz if this works.

I'm using an old Sylvania 19" TV (SRT2119A) via composite output (yellow RCA plugs) and after lots of messing around found that overscan settings were the only really important settings. Currently I'm using:

overscan_left=40
overscan_right=30
overscan_top=7
overscan_bottom=9

I found that if the top and bottom overscan added up to more than 16, screen text outside of the desktop environment was too small to read; also the interface for nano was illegible. Unfortunately, this gives me a tall and skinny R-Pi logo (using Debian6-19-04-2012) on the desktop, but is the best compromise I've found so far for filling the screen and being able to read text outside of the desktop environment.

Hope this helps for anyone else using a CRT monitor.
I sometimes ride my Pi to the Forum.
