Re: Dynamode USB Wifi Dongle issues

Tue Jul 30, 2013 8:35 pm

First of all, thanks for the previous contributions, the steps are concise and clear. However, after building the files I too was having a problem with the frustrating "disagrees about version of symbol module_layout" message. Looks like timing is everything though, my Raspbmc took a kernel update this evening, and used the /usr/src/linux-headers-3.6.11/Module.symvers included in the build into /home/pi/src/kernel/linux-rpi-3.6.y, rebuilt the driver and then installed using "sudo make install". I now have my ra0 interface, so thanks again.

Hope this provides hope for those struggling..

Hi,

For me, the line: "pi@raspberrypi ~/src/kernel/linux-rpi-3.6.y $ gzip -dc /proc/config.gz > .config" returns the message "bash: .config: Permission denied".

Otherwise, working my way through it & everything seems to be working fine so far (great instructions, btw).

llad wrote:Hopefully I think after doing an rpi-update you should just be able to copy the mt*.ko files over to /lib/modules/... again.
Because the source you have should match the latest build.

The rpi-update will replace the old /lib/modules.

Don't forget depmod -a

If not you may have to start again from

pi@raspberrypi ~/src/kernel/linux-rpi-3.6.y $ make mrproper.
.
Also a make clean will be needed before make all in the driver source directory.

Don't mind you asking. I've been using Unix/Linux on and off for 20+ years.
Hi - hope you can help me. I'm in exactly the same position as chandhar. I have run all the code you've given and its made the files, etc. I have copied them across as you've explained and run sudo depmode -a but the drive is still not picked up by lsusb or lsmod:

Hi

Did you solve this?
I think this line is probably the clue.

mtutil7601Usta: no symbol version for module_layout

The following may help. It looks like something went wrong with preping the
http://askubuntu.com/questions/14627/no ... -usbhid-ko

pi@raspberrypi ~/src/kernel/linux-rpi-3.6.y $ make mrproper
pi@raspberrypi ~/src/kernel/linux-rpi-3.6.y $ gzip -dc /proc/config.gz > .config
pi@raspberrypi ~/src/kernel/linux-rpi-3.6.y $ make oldconfig
pi@raspberrypi ~/src/kernel/linux-rpi-3.6.y $ make prepare
pi@raspberrypi ~/src/kernel/linux-rpi-3.6.y $ make modules_prepare
pi@raspberrypi ~/src/kernel/linux-rpi-3.6.y $ wget https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware ... le.symvers

Look for errors in the output of the above steps

Get kernel sources - needed to build the driver

pi@raspberrypi ~/src/kernel $ wget https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/ar ... 6.y.tar.gz

Prepare the kernel/module sources so the driver can build with them.

Hi

Looks like you are working on squeeze version.

I used Wheezy.

If you followed me to the letter you probably have the wrong kernel source code.
The config file you got out of sqeeze is probably for a different kernel.

Hope this helps

Looks like you are working on squeeze version.

I used Wheezy.
uname returns

Code: Select all

squeezeplug 3.6.11+ armv61
Isn't this the one you used or have I already damaged my kernel by running make mrproper and oldconfig?

No shouldn't have damaged the kernel.

If you can mount the SD card you can just remove the .ko files that you copied into the /lib/modules folder.

I am using the wheezy version of Raspbian if yours isn't then the kernel config may be different even if the same version.

Latest kernel update on wheezy build has broken this not sure how to get working again at the moment.

Hmmm!

Hi, I have almost the same problem with my dongle, and I'm asking for some help from you:

Quote:
"Prepare the kernel/module sources so the driver can build with them.

pi@raspberrypi ~/src/kernel $ sudo ln -s /home/pi/src/kernel/linux-rpi-3.6.y /lib/modules/3.6.11+/build
pi@raspberrypi ~/src/kernel $ cd linux-rpi-3.6.y"

my system show me "
pi@raspberrypi ~/src/kernel $ dir
linux-rpi-3.6.y rpi-3.6.y.tar.gz
pi@raspberrypi ~/src/kernel $ cd linux-rpi-3.6.y
-bash: cd: linux-rpi-3.6.y: Permission denied"

Pls advise me what is the problem

Re: Dynamode USB Wifi Dongle issues

Sun Sep 22, 2013 1:25 pm

Hello All

Ralink/MediaTek have now released V 3.0.0.4 of the driver on their website.

Download here http://www.mediatek.com/_en/07_download ... php?sn=501.

This now works with current Raspbian Wheezy kernel.

Mine is.
uname -a
Linux raspberrypi 3.6.11+ #538 PREEMPT Fri Aug 30 20:42:08 BST 2013 armv6l

Although by default it continuously puts a lot of debug info in the syslog file.

You can stop this by editing the os/linux/rt_linux.c

Change the line
ULONG RTDebugLevel = RT_DEBUG_TRACE;
to
ULONG RTDebugLevel = RT_DEBUG_ERROR;

Hope this helps.

hi,excuse me.I meet a mistake while following the instruction
the line pi@raspberrypi ~/src/kernel/linux-rpi-3.6.y $ make prepare
I have run it for more than 8 hours.
Could somebody tell me what happens?
thanks in advance

If you could put it on dropbox or email it to me I could host it?

I have bought this adapter off ebay by accident. I bought one that was advertised as a RealTek RTL8188SU chipset but in fact it has this 148f:7601 Ralink chipset.

I bought it specifically for the RTL8188SU chipset. Not impressed. Not sure if I can be bothered returning it.

Actually, don't bother.

I'm returning it and have bought a known working adapter.

Did you solve this? - mtutil7601Usta: no symbol version for module_layout

A late night accidental 'sudo rm -R /' meant a clean NOOBS Raspbian install and followed the instructions step by step I got the above dmesg message as Chandhar did. I then installed rpi-update and ran it.

As I'm still learning I went through from the first steps - instead of using make clean in the source directories I wiped it all the src folders and started the instructions again. When I rebooted this time I didn't get any error message at all.
It was as if I was back to the start.

But I've learnt a lot this weekend. So after a coffee break I checked

Code: Select all

uname -a
which returned;

Linux raspberrypi 3.10.19+ #600 PREEMPT Sat Nov 16 18:34:43 GMT 2013 armv6l GNU/Linux

This means I had a set of instructions for kernel 3.6.11+ , source for 3.6.y, and Modules.symvers for 3.10.19 and now I was on 3.10.19+ - So if I was careful and tweaked the code it should work, right?

Thanks so much for the clearly written instructions - I've had some error permissions - to do with mounting my source kernel & driver files on

Code: Select all

/media/RPi-Source
not in

Code: Select all

/home/pi/
- and had translated a few of the locations and commands to my system setup. The logic of the commands however remained the same. This problem has helped me learn in leaps and bounds. This reply is a heartfelt thanks & a comment on how I finished the instructions to work in my case.

https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware ... le.symvers is for 3.10.19 as I write this post - first time I followed the driver compile instructions I was on 3.6.11+ - it seems it always posts the latest version. So if I ever want to compile on an older kernel I'll need to find an older verison of Modules.symvers file which matches my system!

I also found the new linux driver source from MediaTek: (Instructions had 3.0.0.3)
http://www.mediatek.com/_en/07_download ... php?sn=501
DPO_MT7601U_LinuxSTA_3.0.0.4_20130913.tar.bz2

But I don't know if the DPO Vs DPA archive naming signifies ARM source code? So I stuck with the code on the instructions.
Could anyone confirm if I could do this? I'm not doing it now as I'm up and running, but I'd like to know.

I replaced the 3.6.y kernel source wget with the following:

Code: Select all

wget https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/archive/rpi-3.10.y.tar.gz

Code: Select all

tar xvfz rpi-3.10.y.tar.gz
I amended the symbolic link between source folder and system libraries as follows:

Code: Select all

sudo ln -s /media/RPi_Source/src/kernel/linux-rpi-3.10.y /lib/modules/3.10.19+/build

Code: Select all

cd linux-rpi-3.10.y
I then borrowed a little sequence of commands from here: http://forum.stmlabs.com/showthread.php?tid=11422- I hadn't got these work either because I couldn't follow the working - unlike here - from this point on I've used some inductive leaps.

Code: Select all

make mrproper
gzip -dc /proc/config.gz > .config
cp .config .config.org
sed -i 's/^CONFIG_CROSS_COMPILE.*/CONFIG_CROSS_COMPILE=""/' .config
#This edited one line in the config file as shown - from .* to ="" - this I still need to look into..

Code: Select all

make modules_prepare
wget https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware/raw/master/extra/Module.symvers
I made sure Module.symvers was in the kernel source folder - but the command on the other instructions seemed to be moving the same file up a directory? This bit never worked - so I manually copied a version of Module.symvers to the main folder of

Code: Select all

/media/RPi_Source/
- I'm not convinced this was needed?

Then moving to the

Code: Select all

cd /media/RPi_Source/src/DPA_MT7601U_LinuxSTA_3.0.0.3_20130717_LS
folder I did the following to make sure the driver compilations was pointing to the folders I needed it to!

# Edit Makefile.inc
# Change

Code: Select all

LINUX_SRC = /lib/modules/$(shell uname -r)/build
# To

Code: Select all

LINUX_SRC = /media/RPi_Source/src/kernel/linux-rpi-3.10.y

Code: Select all

make all
Last 3 commands: Again pointing to the folders I needed:

Code: Select all

sudo cp MODULE/os/linux/mt7601Usta.ko /lib/modules/3.10.19+/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/
sudo cp UTIL/os/linux/mtutil7601Usta.ko /lib/modules/3.10.19+/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/
sudo cp NETIF/os/linux/mtnet7601Usta.ko /lib/modules/3.10.19+/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/
On a reboot I know have ra0 under

Code: Select all

sudo ifconfig -a
- so I can finally crack on with the rest of my headless RaspberryPi plans! Next time I'm checking hardware compatibility before I buy. :D

I have done this for raspbian 2014-01-07. The binaries can be downloaded from http://vdisk.weibo.com/s/z88sCIH-o18rr/1390421896 . Sorry for uploading to a Chinese-only site. I am going to upload it to GoogleDrive or SkyDrive when I have VPN connection.
With these drivers ra0 appers in both ifconfig -a or iwconfig. However wpa_cli does not work. Going to fix this tomorrow.

Hi, smallpotato
I'm running kernel 3.10.25. I follow this steps:
- downloaded kernel
- untar it
- create te dynamic link to /lib/modules/
- download your files

Since I had real problems getting it when I needed it, I took the liberty and uploaded it to some filehoster myself. I hope you are fine with that.

Hello people. Some time search for tutorial to install. I did not expect to be such problems. This tutorial I quite like. But I have a problem already in step "pi@raspberrypi ~/src/kernel/linux-rpi-3.6.y $ make mrproper" ! I received a reply "make: *** No rule to make target ' mproper'. Stop. "
Does anyone tell me why? ! ?
