[SOLVED] Wireless no longer working - latest kernel?

My wireless connection has never been perfect on the Pi but it has been usable.

It now fails, and stays failed, after about a minute of use.

It may be related to the last one or two rpi-update firmware updates.

Currently on Linux soft 3.6.11+ #494 PREEMPT Fri Jul 5 15:30:31 BST 2013 armv6l GNU/Linux

I've reverted to the Jun 29, 2013 firmware and the wireless has been OK for 40 minutes. If it is a firmware problem it was probably introduced in one of the July 2nd commits.

Exactly the same error here, with an Ralink wifi dongle, and same fix (reverting the kernel) worked.

It's nice to know it's not just me.

For info, if others have the same problem you can revert to the end of June firmware with

sudo rpi-update 5ea0f44b673eaa52c578fcd6480495f19cd53d97

I'm afraid I only look at dmesg when I have problems. My memory is that I first noticed the problem after the initial July updates. I didn't bother to check it out initially as I was happy to plug in a cable. I only looked at dmesg after the July 5th update.

Really annoying. I hadn't notice a problem until I updated with rpi-update to the latest #496 and the Pi started behaving a little strangely. I nearly always run rpi-update when I find an update available and I was running #494 and that didn't seem to have problems but checking I found the DMA errors there as well.

I've been hunting this down and the DMA errors appear to start with #488 PREEMPT Tue Jul 2 16:37:47 BST 2013.

I've found an easy way to create this error is to hotplug a wifi adaptor. One or more often several errors occur when you plug it in.

I'm not familiar with the git process. Is there a file or files I need to replace in the kernel source tree?

edited to add: okay, I need to replace drivers/usb/host/dwc_otg/dwc_otg_hcd_intr.c with your proposed version.

I replaced drivers/usb/host/dwc_otg/dwc_otg_hcd_intr.c with the proposed version and downloaded the rebuilt kernel to the Pi.

Wifi has been OK for 55 minutes and there are no errors in dmesg.

The roll-out has to take into consideration ~1x10^6 Pi users with all manner of uses of their hardware.

If we get an issue, reproduced by several people with different hardware (this is the "best" kind of bug - it means there is a vanishingly small chance of a coincidence), then it follows to let people experiencing the issue test with the proposed fix before rolling it out globally.

Once those people test and verify that their particular problem is now resolved, or at least better, then we can consider releasing it unto the world.

What are the associated symptoms? Wireless stops working, I assume. Are you pressing alt-sysrq locally?

Both these things are indicative of "better" - USB itself is not broken, and is responding correctly to failed transfers to a device.

Once the wifi dongle enters that error state, does a replug result in it working again?

There were no immediate problems after those messages were logged. The Pi stopped working afterwards (perhaps 10 minutes or so). I wasn't knowingly pressing any keys, not to say I wasn't leaning on the keyboard.

I loaded up the kernel I compiled again and this time it failed within a few minutes without anything in dmesg (it was in a loop doing dmesg every 30 seconds).

Of course I may have screwed up the kernel compile.

Your kernel update seemed to have fixed the issues I was having. The Pi is running smoothly again and no DMA errors. I've been unplugging and plugging wifi adaptors every so often which was the thing that seemed to cause most DMA errors and I've seen none.
