OK I give up
I've installed wayland-weston

weston-launch starts accelerated gui.
but when I open up the terminal and put in: weston-launch midori

As far as I know this is not yet ready / finished. Correct me if I am wrong though, someone?
So if you install it then it’s probably not going to be in a state where it can be used reliably.
I would expect wayland-weston to be packaged as part of the main Raspbian image, whereupon it will be preconfigured to have an X server in the background that you can use when running X apps etc.

does this mean x programs like midori and firefox simply won't run under weston/wayland?

Correctly - to run under Weston / Wayland, X applications need an extension for Wayland, the XWayland server. This extension is not ready / released to the broad public yet.

This XWayland server is a special version of an X Server which ties in with Wayland (it is a client to Wayland, and a server for X applications).

So, ...

What *will* run under W/W ?
