Powered USB hub help

Thu Jun 20, 2013 1:45 pm

Hello, I recently bought a powered USB hub for my Raspberry pi to accommodate the wifi, keyboard, mouse, etc. Every time I try to use the hub, though, only the wifi dongle works. I've tried swapping ports in the hub and still the same result. The indicator light for the keyboard and mouse flickers and then shuts off while the light for the wifi dongle remains lit. Both keyboard and mouse work in the remaining USB port on the Pi, so it isn't an issue with them. Please help.

EDIT: The powered hub is an Anker 4-port USB3.0 HUB

Hi there
So what tests have you done to eliminate what it could be?
Test the keyboard in isolation on the usb hub, does this work?
Test the mouse in isolation on the usb hub, does that work?
Try these tests on a PC too?
If any of the above tests fail it sounds like there must be some kind of incompatibility with those devices and the hub. If they succeed, but then the point of failure is when you add the wifi dongle that could be something else.

One thing you could try is to see if the USB hub is back powering the Pi. To do this unplug the Pi PSU connector and see if the Pi does not lose power. If it stays on then your hub is back feeding power to the Pi. You’ll need to cut the red wire inside the USB lead that uplinks the powered USB hub to the Pi USB ports.

You may find that if back feeding of power is going on then things will work as expected after you cut the red wire.

The hub works perfectly with my PC, not my pi.

Code: Select all

WiFi Dongle works with Pi and PC
Keyboard works with PC, not Pi (unless plugged into Pi directly)
Mouse works the same as Keyboard

Since the Pi only supports USB 2, then I guess there might be an issue with how that hub is handling falling back to USB 2 compatible mode, and its interaction with the USB support on the Pi.
