I had tried to set the Wifi up through the toolbar icon, firstly through "Network Preferences" and then configured the "Interface wlan0", but only managed to fill in the IP address (got the IP from my laptop when I Googled "What's my IP"), and then configured my SSID, again putting in the IP address, but before asking for help I had cleared both fields. My Wifi stick finds my SSID and connects to it when I give the "Pre Shared Key", which I presume is the password, but I still cannot connect to any webpage, be it http://www.google.co.uk or http://www.raspberrypi.org.

I hope this information is of use, took me a while to copy it all out

Why does your WLAN0 interface have a public (talktalk) IP address assigned to it? Normally a WiFi adapter would connect to a LAN with an address from 192.168.xxx.xxx/24, 172.[16-31].xxx.xxx/16 or 10.xxx.xxx.xxx/8 network address blocks.

What does an ipconfig /all run in a Windows command window show?

Nice thing about the EDIMAX is it flashes when just scanning. The WiPi looks dead until you connect to something. So I can actually SEE my WiFi crashing. The WiFi light stops flashing as soon as I plug the Ethernet cable in. I unplug Ethernet and WiFi starts working again. The problem must be the USB 2.0 Ethernet driver:

At the end I unplug the WiFi and Blueetooth dongles and hotplug them back in, everything works fine after that. I then unplug the Ethernet cable and plug it back it, again no errors. So I don't think it's a power supply issue. Both my Pi 2 exhibit the same behavior and going back to older firmware didn't solve the problem.

Maybe someone can help me with the following issue:
I want to use the PiB 512 as a wireless access point for a wireless SMB service.

Due to the bug mentioned here http://sirlagz.net/2013/02/10/how-to-us ... r-part-3b/ I had to remove wlan0 from /etc/default/ifplugd

/usr/local/wlan_ap.sh starts hostapd, smbd and adds required routes to the route table. Everything works fine if I start the script manually. For some reasons, however, the post-up statement in /etc/network/interfaces for the same script does not seem to work; the script does not seem to be executed. When I boot the Pi, wlan0 has the correct address and netmask afterwards - so at least this part seems to be evaluated.

Does anybody have an idea why? What am I doing wrong?

I would have expected the EW-7811Un to work without you needing to make any changes to your wifi configuration as the driver is included and the wifi was already set up. And the tutorial is rather old, Oct 2012, so may not be applicable with the latest versions of raspberry kernel.

What version OS are you using? If you are able can you post the output of commands

I had another thought after posting that maybe it was the other end of the WiFi connection causing the problem. I dug out an Apple Time Machine and set up the WiFi on that, and was able to connect that, so I think the Raspberry Pi and the Edimax EW-7811U are working OK. The problem now seems to be that I cannot connect to my main WiFi network, which is a Verizon ActionTec MI424WR. I use exactly the same setup, but with the wpa-ssid and wpa-psk updated. I can connect to one, but not the other.

Another curious thing. When I connect to my Time Machine WiFi network, the Raspberry Pi has two IP addresses.

Where is the other IP address coming from?

The issue about 2 IP's has been mentioned quite a few times recently in the forum. I believe it to do with the new wifi set up in raspbian 2015-05-05 with regard to using fixed IP's.

Example here viewtopic.php?f=28&t=111709. Also if you look at the last post in that thread it looks like it points to another thread with details of a possible fix.

The secondary IP address is a feechur introduced with the raspberrypi-net-mods changes to the network manager stuff. It's a cruel plot to confuse and befuddle all the folks who run headless with static IP addresses defined in their interfaces files.

They changed the way to assign static addresses but completely failed to document how it works now and how updating the interfaces file is 100% wrong and leads to two IP addresses.

I've tried everything in this article (twice) and everything on my Pi seems to be set correctly. I get through all the steps successfully, however, I am still not getting an internet connection and it appears to be because the Pi is not getting assigned an IP adddress. In wpa_gui I get "Completed (station)" under Status, and details of the network in the other slots, but it is blank under "IP address".

How do I check if the Pi is getting onto my home network?
How can I force the router to assign it an IP address?

I am new to the Raspberry Pi world but would like to ask a WiFi question. I have a Raspberry Pi 2 and was attempting to get OSMC or OpenElec to load. Raspbian ran fine but the Media type OS's would not load. The Raspberry was plugged into a range extender.
I thought this might be a problem so i moved it to my router and tried again and it worked fine also the TV is much larger where the router is as apposed to where the extender is.
Did the install work because of the larger 1080 TV or because it was plugged directly into the router?

i cannot run commands to force connect wifi as i dont have any screen, its working perfectly if i do not update .

apt-get update shouldn't cause a problem but apt-get upgrade could if it updates the kernel version.

When you update your kernel version you will also need to update the wifi driver using the link you posted.

To avoid having to update the driver whenever you update the kernel there is now an alternative driver built into the kernel, however, to get it to work you will need to install the firmware it uses. However, some people have complained about it causing problems and prefer using the driver from the link above.

To get the built in driver to work you will need to use the command

to install the firmware and then edit the file /etc/modprobe.d/8188eu.conf using command

and either comment out the line

by adding a "#" to the beginning of the line or delete the line. After making the changes you will then need to reboot your Pi to make the driver active.

Sorry missed this one.

A driver for this wifi is included in the image so no need to install a driver. You should only need to configure the wifi to get it working.

You can do that by adding the following section to the file /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

From the info you posted you are using the latest version of Raspbian and the driver is included and is rtl8187.ko. You could try updating the realtek firmware

but I'm not sure that will make any difference. It is possible that airmon-ng is using a mode that is not compatible with the wifi dongle you have.

Hi ,

Steps i followed :
1. Downloaded Raspbian image from official website.
2. Burned it in SD card.
3. Planned to connect pi via Ethernet cable with laptop for using laptop's wifi (laptop is connected to dlink wifi router).
4. Went through this link , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwLAC0JSKKE ,
5. Enabled laptop internet sharing , enabled automatically get ip for LAN connection of pi.
6. Did ipconfig in windows CLI ,noted the ip address(169.254.8) as mentioned in video and added that ip addredd in cmdline.txt of raspberry pi as mentioned in video.
7. Started xming, putty with ip address 169.254.11 , able to access pi gui by , lxpanel .
8. Pinged www.google.com in CLI of pi,unknown host.
9. Watched many sources to find why this is happening , typed ifconfig in pi CLI found that wlan0 is missing.
10. Searched in internet for the same , but no post for wlan0 missing if connected pi to laptop via ethernet, all posts are regarding if connectivity with wifi dongle, in which they said to download necessary drivers.
i am doing same for 10 days now i am lost .

Can any one please make me understand what i need to do next or rectify my steps ?

i am not currently running raspian i am running pwnpi 3... but i did try that and still got nothing... is there anything else i could try? i am using a AWUS036h wifi dongle and it is a RTL8187.... it says that it supports it in the pwnpi website but for some reason it just doesn't recognize it other than through the usb port (lsusb)...
