No display when monitor is turned on after the Pi

Sun May 12, 2013 11:12 am

I have a weird problem. When I turn on my HDMI monitor before I turn on the Pi, everything works as expected. But, when I turn on the Pi first and then the monitor, I get no display. Monitor's OSD says there's no input - it displays "HDMI power saving mode" for a while and then goes to standby mode. Then, after the reset (ctrl+alt+del) it works as expected.

Is this a firmware bug or something?

No, it's a firmware feature. If the firmware doesn't detect an HDMI device, it switches to composite.

You can force it to output HDMI by setting hdmi_force_hotplug in /boot/config.txt. The required line is probably already there, just remove the "#" from the start of the line.

Of course, if you do that, you cannot then connect a composite monitor to the RaspPi.
