permission on a usb stick

Tue Apr 30, 2013 10:27 am

Hi,

i have noticed a strange behaviours when iam trying to use a usb stick on the pi.
For some reason, the software (transmission or other), can't write on my key (i mounted it in /mnt/usbkey, auto mount in fstab).
I put the folders on 777 with chmod, and change the ownership of with chown.
When i use this usb stick on my mac book pro, i dont have any issue, i can edit everything.
But on the pi, i keep getting errors saying my apps cant edit , or move files on my usb key ...
do anyone got the same problem ? even if the permissions seems to be all open

can you run 'mount' after you plug in the USB stick ? and also post the contents of /etc/fstab ?
Chances are, it's formatted as vfat and the correct permissions aren't being given when you plug in the USB stick.

Yes you are right the stick is mounted as vfat:
/dev/sda1 on /mnt/usbkey type vfat (ro,noexec,relatime,fmask=0000,dmask=0000,allow_utime=0022,codepage=cp437,iocharset=ascii,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro)

I don't know what do that mean, what should it be mounted as ?

this is my fstab :
/dev/sda1 /mnt/usbkey auto defaults,noexec,umask=0000 0 0

i guess i have to change the "auto", to ext3 ?
