I think it would be much better if you put the text here instead of on pastebin.
I find it very hard to read, for several reasons. The images do not show up automatically on the forum, but TBH I don't think they add anything relevant anyway.

From the bit I read I gather that you use a pre-loaded SD card. Fact is that these quite often are loaded with ancient versions of Raspbian.
I would download a current version and try again.

If you check your card in a PC you should see a disk with around 10 files on it. If it has a file called 'loader.bin' than you definitely have a card with an elderly version of Raspbian.

I think the date on the files such as start.elf and bootcode.bin would be more instructive.

Doesnt' look like an 'ancient' version ? Here are the files on the SD disk from the Pi Hut:

Volume in drive E has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 3312-932F

Directory of E:\

10/28/2012 05:40 PM 17,764 bootcode.bin
12/15/2012 05:43 PM 142 cmdline.txt
12/15/2012 05:43 PM 1,180 config.txt
10/28/2012 05:40 PM 5,282 fixup.dat
10/28/2012 05:40 PM 2,020 fixup_cd.dat
10/28/2012 05:40 PM 2,695,192 kernel.img
10/28/2012 05:40 PM 2,104,952 kernel_cutdown.img
10/28/2012 05:40 PM 9,522,048 kernel_emergency.img
10/28/2012 05:40 PM 2,347,828 start.elf
10/28/2012 05:40 PM 523,144 start_cd.elf
12/16/2012 07:51 PM 137 issue.txt
11 File(s) 17,219,689 bytes
0 Dir(s) 41,385,984 bytes free

Would you still recommend downloading the most recent (2013-02-09) version?
Thanks again for your help,
PR

If the chip in the middle of the RPi says 'Hynix' then you definitely need the 2013-02-09 (or later) version.

http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/3534 (The RPi's second best kept secret despite the public service announcement!)

Your pre-made card has an October 2012 version of Raspbian. Barely recent enough for a 512 Mbyte RPi even with a Samsung RAM chip.
