Raspbmc - External HDD

First post on here and apologies now if this problem has been discussed/solved previously but I feel my particular circumstance is unique from what I have read using Google and various forums.

A bit about the kit and purpose.
I have a Model B RPi with latest version of Raspbmc installed, this is power by a 5v 3.5a powered USB hub and connected to my TV/Network. I want to use a 320GB 2.5" HDD with my movies on as an external drive to play movies from.

Problem.
When I connect the HDD direct to my powered USB hub the light on the HDD flashes and goes off but the disc is still running (feel it) but it does not show up in the Files option on XBMC.

I have used Putty to SSH into the RPi and I have used "df -h" and it doesn't show the drive.

I am a novice at best when it comes to linux I was wondering if anyone could help me troubleshoot this problem to find a solution.

Did you plug in the drive before booting the Pi or while it is running?

You could try this:
* plug in the drive while the pi is running
* check for any error messages with

Code: Select all

dmesg | tail

Thanks Dirk very quick reply, I tried hot and cold connections.

I will try the above dmsg tail later on and let you know how that goes.

Code: Select all

root@raspbmc:~# dmesg | tail

This is the code I got back after plugging in the device... nothing that I can see about USB.

No mention at all in the log, so apparently the drive is not detected...
I asssume you tested the drive in a different computer (?)

Maybe try a different port on your hub. Just today or yesterday I read somewhere here on the forum that there are hubs where some of the ports are only meant for powering / charging devices, so no data transfer.

Dirk.

Apparently I am an idiot...

Simple fix in the end I basically didn't plug the RPi into the "master" USB slot on the hub which wasn't immediately obvious as the USB ports aren't labelled but there is a micro USB slot which I connected to one of the RPi's USB slots...reboot and viola.

Thanks for your guidance.
