Pi powered from USB port?

Wed Mar 06, 2013 12:42 pm

I just want to ask if this is normal since it just does not make any sense to me. Sorry for my poor english.

I have a powered usb hub connected to usb port on pi (not the power port!) and when i turn the hub on, pi starts to boot..without being connected to power supply. Is this normal behaviour? Can pi be powered using only that port?

The quick (and dirty) answer is "Yes" :) This is discussed in several places in the wiki eg. "Verified Peripherals", "Troubleshooting Power ...". In practice it depends upon the brand/model of powered usb hub. I've been gathering data on a number of hubs for some time now - if you're curious about the details follow this link: http://www.cpmspectrepi.webspace.virgin ... esChk.html NB: Some of the cross-linked pages are still "work in progress"
Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

@coogan: Can pi be powered using only that port?

Yes it can. Some testing will be necessary to make sure it is getting enough power to run reliably. Make a backup of the SD card. Then just use it for a while. watch for card corruption or rersets (power shuts off for no reason and then restarts). If you see neither of these then it will probably work just fine.

DO NOT USE THAT USB HUB WITH A POWER SUPPLY ALSO CONNECTED TO THE RASPI.

If you want to power the RasPi seperately then search for the posts about "back-powering"

If you read the "back powering" posts you will find that you can "fix" the hub
by disconnecting the "red wire" either inside the hub (if you can open it up)
or breaking off the power pin on the pi connector end.
I recently fixed mine by stripping off a bit of the cable sheath and snipping off
the red wire, and duct taping it. It is a bit risky, in case your red wire means something
else, but is better trying it, than throwing it away.

Well that sucks. I want to use a normal power supply, but i still need the hub for external hdd..

I will try the "red wire" solution but it looks like i need a new usb hub :/

Thanks for the answers guys!

I picked a new in original packing 'Belkin F5U234 Mains Powered 4 Port Hub 5V 2.1A' for under a tenner on eBay, even powers up my Pi through the miniUSB 8-)

I will always assume you are running Raspbian for desktop and Raspbmc for XMBC !

best way is to power the RPI from a USB port on the Hub as well as using it to power your peripherals - if it does back power then you only need that to power the RPi - saves you the use of a plug and cables one switch does it all

Although, if you want to do that, ModMyPi.com sells powered hubs designed to do this safely and thus avoid using two power supplies unnecessarily.

Because of good advice like this bought a decent Belkin F5U234 USB Hub for not much more money than a Chinese crap one.

Server backup

Wed Jun 25, 2014 6:47 am

I'm currently using CloudBacko Pro for server backup and the result is just promising. Besides local drive, it can also backup to Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Storage as well as FTP for offsite protection. Worth to take a look at www<dot>cloudbacko<dot>com
