Image compatibility

I posted earlier about an image not booting up and the reply mentioned that the firmware may not have supported the new 512MB SDRAM. How can i check if the image is compatible, is there a way of reading any of the boot files to see if it is written for the new upgrade in memory? Also if it isnt can files be substituted to make it work ?
