What are you connected to for your video output? The two video outputs (HDMI and composite) are mutually exclusive and it will default to composite if an HDMI device is not detected. If you have any sort of adpater from the Pi HDMI to your monitor, then it may not detect the monitor so it won't show video. I have also found that even if you are going directly into an HDMI port on a TV or monitor that the TV or monitor must be powered on before the Pi.

it was using the HMDI directly ro a tv the tv was on and the tv switches between no device connected to no signal when i power up and vice versa whan i power down.
So there appears to be something on the output.
Ill try the composite as well next chance i get.
Should the green light not be on more than a single little blip?

Yes.
Because you say that you downloaded and burned a new card, I assume you have a computer and a card reader. Use those to see what files the PC can see on the SD card.

There were reports of RS sending out some cards which had been pre-flashed with a really old OS and firmware which didn't work on the newer 512 Mbyte RPis. If you still have that card with the OS on it, what dates do you see when you put the card in your PC?
Which Wheezy did you flash yourself? And are you sure you did it properly? The Raspbmc installer uses a different method so just because you got that one right doesn't mean that your burning of Wheezy was done properly.

I don't know the "cut-off" date but I would have thought that 28 Oct would be late enough to work on 512 Mbyte RPis. So I'm puzzled that it does not work.
I don't understand "I downloaded the network version from the pi website and downloaded the image burner from thier link". I don't see a "network version" of anything at
http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads.
The recommended version is Raspian wheezy 2013-02-09 as mentioned and linked to on
http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads.
