HDMI Problems

Thu Feb 07, 2013 10:45 pm

I have just received my Pi and have some SD cards with Risc OS and Linux on them.

It doesn't matter which I use, the screen sometimes dims a little though there is nothing connected other than power, ethernet, HDMI, mouse and keyboard. Is this normal?

Also it often boots up with a blank screen and I have to unplug the power to try again. It has just taken four attempts before it would boot into an OS with a visible screen.

Is this a sign of a faulty unit or am I doing something wrong?

Heads up try not to re-boot by unplugging the power it can corrupt the SD forcing you to re-image.

The problem is you may fix the first problem only to have it undone by an SD card corruption.

Sometimes there is no other way you have to pull the plug just be aware that it could cause additional problems.

Lots of stuff elswhere on the forum on how to safe shutdown. ;)

Its unclear exactly when your seeing this dimming, but this could be part of the screensaver and is completely normal.

I did have inconsistent boot behaviour when I first got my Pi last year. It was resolved by an updated to the firmware. There's a tool to do this very easily called rpi-update.

Post update it become a new beast!

That could be the problem. My power supply states 0.7A, probably not enough power for the peripherals! I'll get a more powerful one for it and see if that solves the issue.

It's a good move to look for a powered USB hub and use that to power your RPi

If you are running Raspbian, it appears to dim when it changes font about halfway through boot.
