No sound (HDMI)

Mon Jan 28, 2013 5:33 pm

i am at that point that the only solution could be to buy a new Raspberry Pi and see if it is the hardware that is the problem why i dont have any HDMI sound.
I bought my Raspberry 2 month ago (512mb) everything went well with installing Raspbmc and after i changede the config.txt to add the hdmi_drive=2 the audio worked fine.

I saved my config.txt file so every time i installed a new version of Raspbmc i could copy/paste the text over so i were 100% sure that it would work again.

Now 1 week ago i would try to start all over with my installation and installed the newest version of Raspbmc..... And thats it, cant get any sound out of my speakers anymore :( tryed everything i think, read every forum about this issue and cant seem to find out what is wrong.

My setup is:
Raspberry Pi 512mb
Onkyo TX-SR805
Pioneer 508xd

The Pi is installed with a HDMI to my reciver and then a HDMI from reciver to my TV

Things i tryed:

- A new HDMI cable
- A different HDMI port in my reciver
- Reset my reciver to factory settings to start all over
- Tested the HDMI input with my WDTV live and it works fine with it
- HDMI from the Pi direct to my TV
- Reinstalled Raspbmc about 15 times and tryed different nightly builds
- Installed OpenElec and changed the config.txt to add the hdmi_drive=2
- Installed the newest version of Wheezy to try the ./hello_audio.bin

Nothing seems to work, strange that it worked fine for 2 month and now i suddenly cant get any sound out of my Pi.

I also tryed the analog output and changed the system settings to analog and there is sound in my headphones, so my Pi can play sounds but not when using HDMI.

Anyone have an idea what i could try?

(sorry for my bad english)

Have you looked at the second "Sticky" on the front page of this Troubleshooting forum?

Have you tried to test hdmi sound with a classic version of wheezy raspberry, on which one it's easier to change config.txt ?

Could you send us your whole config.txt file ? It could be easier for us to help you.

Have the same thread going on here:

http://forum.stmlabs.com/showthread.php?tid=6419

So you can see what i have tryed, really cant seem to find out were the problem is.

Config file for Wheezy:

# uncomment if you get no picture on HDMI for a default "safe" mode
#hdmi_safe=1

# uncomment this if your display has a black border of unused pixels visible
# and your display can output without overscan
#disable_overscan=1

# uncomment the following to adjust overscan. Use positive numbers if console
# goes off screen, and negative if there is too much border
#overscan_left=16
#overscan_right=16
#overscan_top=16
#overscan_bottom=16

# uncomment to force a console size. By default it will be display's size minus
# overscan.
#framebuffer_width=1280
#framebuffer_height=720

# uncomment if hdmi display is not detected and composite is being output
#hdmi_force_hotplug=1

# uncomment to force a specific HDMI mode (this will force VGA)
#hdmi_group=1
#hdmi_mode=1

# uncomment to force a HDMI mode rather than DVI. This can make audio work in
# DMT (computer monitor) modes
hdmi_drive=2

# uncomment to increase signal to HDMI, if you have interference, blanking, or
# no display
#config_hdmi_boost=4

# uncomment for composite PAL
#sdtv_mode=2

#uncomment to overclock the arm. 700 MHz is the default.
#arm_freq=800

# for more options see http://elinux.org/RPi_config.txt

Config file for Raspbmc:

arm_freq=950
core_freq=450
isp_freq=450
sdram_freq=450
over_voltage=6
disable_overscan=1
hdmi_drive=2
gpu_mem_256=128
gpu_mem_512=256

Ok I've watched the other forum.

Try with using your wheezy distribution at first to set hdmi_safe=1
Download music on console using the command : sudo apt-get install moc
lauch moc using : mocp
try to use a mp3 file : what appens ?

If it doesn't work, try set :
hdmi_force_hotplug=1
hdmi_group=1
config_hdmi_boost=4

(for hdmi boost, you can change the value between 1 and 7)

maybe try stop overcloking settings on raspbmc (why not try ?)

keep me on

Yihaaaa!!! With hdmi_safe=1 i get sound out of my speakers at last. At least now i know that my Pi still works. But the resolution dosent fit my screen anymore with hdmi_safe=1 turned on.

Spuech you are freaking ******* great!! :P

But what now? Why do i suddenly have to have hdmi_safe=1 in my config.txt before i can hear any sounds in my speakers??

config_hdmi_boost=4

Just tried these settings as well. And here I also get sounds in my speakers :D

I even bought a new Pi yesterday just to find out if it were my old one that was broken, but then I can use that in my bedroom :)

Found out by just putting in hdmi_group=1 in my config.txt together with hdmi_drive=2 i have sound in my speakers again. Strange :?
