RP hangs on boot while mounts external HD

Mon Jan 28, 2013 8:39 am

Hi,

I have the official Debian image installed in my RP. I use a 2 TB external hard disk connected by USB formatted in ext3, and configured like this in /etc/fstab

Code: Select all

UUID=669c9bb5-a0d0-4fa2-907d-22b3522a67d2 /media/disk1	ext3		defaults,nodiratime	0 0
the UUID is for the partition /dev/sda1. The issui is RP doesn't boot right if the HD is connected because during boot: system stops on "mounting /dev/sda1..." and never continues. But the boot goes fine if HD is not connected at first and I mount that partition after boot by command line.

Yes, it's an 3.5'' USB 3.0 HD with its own power adapter.

leave the line in fstab
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y
reboot with the External HD plugged in
if it fails reboot again with it unplugged
then type tail -f /var/log/syslog
plug it in
and report here what it says

Of course, it's compatible and the drive works fine with my Raspberry if I mount it _AFTER_ Linux initialization, but not in /etc/fstab

I note you are tying to mount your drive on /media . I've not got access to a PI right now, but on a.n.other linux box mount says:

tmpfs on /media type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,rootcontext=system_u:object_r:mnt_t:s0,seclabel,mode=755)

This is where removable media get automounted when you insert them.

I would try mounting your device on /mnt and see if that works during boot.

It seems to be solved. Perhaps the filesystem was corrupted or something, but now it has booted well. Thanks to all!
