SSD boot for RPI4 not working

Fri Nov 27, 2020 1:08 am

Hello,
I have:
* Raspberry Pi 4B
* SSD Kingston KC600 512 GB 2.5'' SATA III
* Enclousre RHINO GO SATA 2.5" USB 3.0

I'm using official RPi 4 power supplier

I've used Raspberry Pi Imager to put RPi OS Desktop onto SD card. I've launched system correctly, updated and upgraded ackages.
`vcgencmd bootloader_version` command shows:
Sep 3 2020 13:11:43
version c3-5221a5d[...] release

Then I copied using RPi's SD card copier SD cards contents onto my SS ( I tried both options: with and without selecting "New Partiotion UUIDs")

After pulling SD card out and plugging power supplier (I tried with macbook pro supplier too), sadly, RPI does not boot.

Process hangs up on different stages of the installation (sometimes I see RPi symbol on the screen, sometimes gray scree with white dots, sometimes Debian loading screen) but usually before that there is text printed to the console:

EXT-fs error (device sda2): __ext4_find_entry:1531: inode #22153941 [...]

and:

[TIME] TImed out waiting for device /dev/disk/by-partyuuid/a239503d6-01
[DEPEND[ Dependency failed for File System Check on /dev/disk/by-partyuuid/a23503d6-01
[DEPEND[ Dependency failed for /boot
[DEPEND[ Dependency failed for ocal File Systems
[FAILED] Failed to start Journal Service
[FAILED] Failed to start Load Kernel Modules

What can be the cause?

Thx

device sda2 would be the second drive.
try unplugging that & boot then plug it in

sda2 is the second partition of the sda block device. Not second device that would be sdb

Maybe look into compatible with you setup I have no experience with USB boot but it looks like the rootfs that's ext4 formated has something wrong with it.

See this post: Booting a Pi-4B via USB

If that procedure is successful and you want to replicate an SD card to a USB device, use: usb-boot

What does the command vcgencmd bootloader_config return?

I can't find any info on which chipset that enclosure uses, but according to a PDF downloaded from the maker's site it's compatible with Windows and Mac OS with no mention of Linux (however, they do say Linux on the website itself, so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ).

With the SSD connected, what do the commands lsusb and lsusb -t return.

My guess is it's using a JMicron chip that doesn't properly support UAS and would need USB storage quirks to boot (but even then it wouldn't support TRIM).

I've tried a couple of different Kingston SSD models, and both were quite power hungry, but I was successful in booting my 4B2 from a Kingston UV500 with the official power supply (using a USB 3.0 to SATA-III adapter cable with an ASMedia 1153E chip).
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?

Have you checked this Thread?

My SSDs works only, when I use the squirks Line in cmdline.txt...
