Pi 4 no sound

Sun Jul 26, 2020 11:48 pm

I'm having trouble getting the sound to work on my Rasp Pi 4. I have 2 monitors connected via DVI and sound is via the green socket on the Pi. The speaker icon has AV Jack selected and my .asoundrc file is as follows

Code: Select all

pcm.!default {
        type asym
        playback.pcm {
                type plug
                slave.pcm "output"
        }
        capture.pcm {
                type plug
                slave.pcm "input"
        }
}

pcm.output {
        type hw
        card 2
}

ctl.!default {
        type hw
        card 2
}
aplay lists the devices as follows

Code: Select all

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: b1 [bcm2835 HDMI 1], device 0: bcm2835 HDMI 1 [bcm2835 HDMI 1]
  Subdevices: 3/4
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
  Subdevice #1: subdevice #1
  Subdevice #2: subdevice #2
  Subdevice #3: subdevice #3
card 1: b2 [bcm2835 HDMI 2], device 0: bcm2835 HDMI 2 [bcm2835 HDMI 2]
  Subdevices: 1/2
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
  Subdevice #1: subdevice #1
card 2: Headphones [bcm2835 Headphones], device 0: bcm2835 Headphones [bcm2835 Headphones]
  Subdevices: 1/2
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
  Subdevice #1: subdevice #1
but I get no sound at all. I've tried pavucontrol and it shows the sound level meters going up and down as if something is playing for playback and output but nothing comes out of the jack socket.
I've tried this suggested fix but no change,

has anyone else experienced or, preferably, fixed this problem?
I'm fully up to date on software.

What is the output connected to?

Computer audio outputs are not amplified, so you'd need to use powered speakers (speakers with a built-in amp), although the analog port should be able to drive reasonably efficient headphones (works with my Sennheiser HD497 headphones, without additional amplification).
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?

I have no sound as well, either from HDMI or headphones. I'm using the most-current build of Raspberry Pi OS provided by Raspberry Pi Imager.

Do you have the 5.4 kernel and the vc4-kms-v3d overlay?
