Hi
in my case, I just change the ownership of .Xauthority in my home directory because the ssh and the vnc installation change it to root:root.

Hello again!

I tried the change of Xauthority to the backup and change the own to pi, now I get the open box screen. Now I need to start in the normal screen heh :(

NOTE:
wo wow, I went out of open box, and tried the login/password in the white screen and now I have the access to the desktop :).

No sure if I want to use the tightvncserver again.

One question: If I remove the Xauthority.backup file and let the change of owner could I get access to the desktop?
I'm gonna try.

I tried that and it booted to a black screen with a mouse cursor. From there I could get a GUI started, but it didn't boot right into it. Was there anything else you did?

Hi there,
A late entry to this topic, but I ran into this today and found an easy fix.
I followed the classic tutorials to setup vnc, which resulted in a script /etc/init.d/vncboot
the copy/paste from the internet had an entry for :0.
Change this to :1. :0 is the native HDMI display.
all is well now :)

What is a "white screen" ?

What is a "black screen" ?
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

This is so fantastic! Thanks for this solution! I got into this mess by stupidly typing:

Code: Select all

sudo startx
in my terminal window and I could *not* figure out how to get out of the session since it had started automatically running the xserver on Startup! But your solution worked well. Thanks!

Do this

sudo visudo

Find this line

Code: Select all

pi ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL
change it to

Code: Select all

pi ALL=(ALL) PASSWD: ALL
that will train you to stop prefixing every command with sudo.

Use mRemoteNG
Thats a free software for vnc,ssh,rdp....
1.download and install mRemoteNG from this link:http://www.mremoteng.org/download
2.install xrdp with this command

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install xrdp
(You should be connect to internet to download package details by terminal)
3.after installation get ip address by this code

Code: Select all

sudo ifconfig
(Try to setup a static ip address to easy for doing)
4.run mRemoteNG and enjoy!!!
(mremoteng help is very useful to read)

Thanks for the xauthority fix from michaelpgc. I had the same exact problem, and had uninstalled tightvncserver - but obviously it was the root access required for this file that was the problem.

Suggestion given by Eredien

Code: Select all

sudo startx
worked with me - now can access my desktop as before - still one problem
am not able to see an external HardDrive used for data storage commected to Rpi by an USB slot - had same problem in the past with first version of Rpi - solved it just typing

Code: Select all

apt-get update
- this time it seems to be useless tough - any suggestion for me?

That is a very bad idea. Better to fix the problem than throw a large hammer at it and cause more damage!

Hello,

I found a solution in another topic. It worked for me.
DrBobPratt wrote:ON this startx problem, I found the following in my case.

.Xauthority was owned by root and group root. Not sure why this happened. I did install TightVNC which seemed to precipitate the problem. Still trying to figure that one out.

anyway, I did the following
sudo chown pi .Xauthority
sudo chgrp pi .Xauthority
startx

voila, LXDE started up just fine.

Just ran into this same issue on my raspberry pi 3. It turns out, I had a syntax error in home/pi/.profile. My code worked fine under bash/zsh, but not for plain old sh (which is a subset AFAIK).

The code I wrote:

Code: Select all

function foo()
{
  # code here
}
Should have been:

Code: Select all

foo()
{
  # code here
}

By the way I've noticed that some of you guys have not changed your password, and you have been experiencing problems. My advice is CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD ASAP, for I have changed mine (from raspberry) and have not experienced 95% of the problems some of you have :?

I hope this comes in use
Benj :P :P :P
Ps, if you CAN login again, type username, password, in correct prompts, and then, at the $ type:

Code: Select all

sudo passwd
as this will change password!!!!
