Brand new Pi - constant problems

Fri Jul 03, 2020 6:16 am

Hi,

I've just bought a new Raspberry Pi 4 8GB, and I'm experiencing constant problems. First I've installed Manjaro, but it was terrible, unusable, crashing, programms not starting.

So I've installed Raspberry Pi OS. On a freshly installed OS I'm randomly, but often, getting black screen when trying to play a single youtube video for example.

Temperature is fine, around 45-50 degrees.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Lukas

Can you describe the symptoms in more detail? Link to the video etc?

Hi,

I have just recreated the problem with this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VlE654abDo
But it's happening on random videos.
I've recorder it: https://photos.app.goo.gl/LZTkHqLhTBzfJvxNA

In general when browsing YouTube, the Pi gets laggy, choking. Before that I did sysbench for couple of minutes, the temperature didn't go above 45. I'm using that Argon One case.

Oh, and it didn't restart the Pi - it's just stuck on that black screen, I have to restart manualy.

It seems to me that these are not Pi problems, these are Chromium problems. My Chromium hangs the OS from time to time and forces me to physically turn off the power of the Pi. I knew that browsers were poorly written programs, so I didn’t really worry. If your other programs work well (for example, Kodi & VLC), then your minicomputer also works well, just browsers have poorly programs
PS try watching youtube in Kodi. Kodi works flawlessly for me

I've just installed Firefox, and it seems this one doesn't crash on youtube. However Firefox is extremely slow, and I would say it's a bummer that a default Pi OS browser is incompatible with Raspberry Pi.

OK, I found a solution, to fix Chromium issues: viewtopic.php?t=275863

Was the solution to disable the compositor?

The solution was to:

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade

(normal upgrade apparently doesn't upgrade something)

and then:

sudo raspi-config
advanced options
enable compositor
finish then reboot

After that no black screen on YoutUbe in Chromium, and it also feels faster.

Just a point for the OP and other new folks to consider. There are millions of Pi's out in the wild. Certainly there are early life failures, and sometimes software updates don't go as planned and stuff breaks. However, if you are experiencing horrible performance that everyone else is not screaming about it most likely is something that is different/broken with your particular install. Millions of users are not experiencing horrible performance and black screens. Often this is caused by either installing something other than the supported software or by making some sort of mistake when do so.

There is no shame in being new at something. Everyone was there at some point. However, it would be nice if folks could fully describe their problem, and what they had tried (if anything) to resolve it.

Blaming the Pi and RPT when Manjaro runs poorly is akin to loading Mac OSX on some random windows laptop and being unhappy with the resultant performance.

If something is not working as expected, the after doing the initial debugging the first validation step is attempt to do it on a stock install of Raspberry Pi OS, that is fully updated. If it works there, then your issue is with the other software. You should take that up with whomever is tasked with supporting that software.
