Raspberry Pi 4B boots, then suddenly turns off

I got an rpi 4 B kit for my birthday recently, but so far it's been a rather frustrating journey.
The first rpi I got proved defective, so I had to return it. The second one turned on, then fried itself.
For the record, for each successive pi I'm only using the components of the kit I got: the rpi itself, an rpi-branded wall wart capable of delivering 5.1V / 3A, and the 16GB microSD card.
Combined with the first rpi, I must say that I already have quite a sour taste in my mouth: something that should have been < 30 minutes to set up has already taken up 2 weeks of my time.
So the electrical design is perhaps an important area to consider a lot more when designing the next rpi version.
Which brings me to the 3rd rpi 4 B I've received.
I turn it on, and it boots, but it will simply turn itself off after a little while (and leave the red/power LED blinking).
Here "a little while" is defined as "I can't even complete the config wizard that starts after the rpi has booted".
As-is, the device is unpredictable and nonfunctional, and so it's worse than useless.
Therefore I'd like to know why it turns off, and what I can do about it so I can actually start using it.
