RPI 3B+ Overheating?

Tue Jun 16, 2020 8:18 pm

Have a strange issue, Im hoping you might be able to help with

I have a 3B+ in a small black case, with a fan on it (it came with the case)

Using a wireless keyboard/mouse combo and a long HDMI cable to myTV with a 4GB Seagate USB Drive plugged into a USB port and it has its own AC power.

Running Raspberry Pi OS .Raspberry Pi OS (32-bit) with desktop and recommended software 5-27-20

Ive tried almost every open-source version of a media player I can find and so I decided to just "rough it"

All my DVDs are ripped to the HD, and so my plan was, swap my TV inpout over to the HDMI and use VLC to watch movies, its not pretty, but should work and should allow me full youtube access and access to disney+

Starting last night I started experiencing weird things, this morning I fired up youtube and it took forever, then froze.

So I rebooted and during lunch tried to watch video

First time in my life I started seeing the thermometer on a RASPI

Then everything started to stuutter and finally froze.

SO im thinking its a heat issue, but curious as to why all mof a sudden?

Now admittedly up to know Ive been doing nothing but stting oy up and transferring files etc.

But I ran a system almost comepletyely identical for alm, most 2 years before O moved last month and eberything worked great
Any ideas?

maybe I need to work with more of a stripped down desktop?

Im open to ideas

The Raspberry Pi SBC can not overheat, it has Thermal Protection which throttles until the temperature is again below the threshold.

Therefore you need to find out why the temperature is spiking, maybe take the board out of its case and stand it up on its side ?

Regards media player is not the default VLC or even the CLi OmxPlayer suiting your needs, afaiaa they are the only 2 options which are HW accelerated ??

Though if all you need is a media player you could try LibreElec (Kodi Interface):

Considering that the thermometer icon appeared on screen, I'm guessing above 70 degrees or so.
