Problem with Network and USB

Mon Dec 31, 2012 3:00 pm

Hello all ;)

First sorry for my English level a little rough.

I bought for Christmas a Raspberry Pi (with 512 MB RAM). Very happy to see it under the Christmas tree, some hours after, my smile had disappeared.

First, i tried to use Debian (arm), the release i use on my dedicated server and some computers I have in my house. But after many bugs, i decided to switch to Raspbian. But many bugs with this release too... :( : impossible to work with better of 30 second without a bug... I work only in console mode. The bugs I talk are the next :
- Network connection fail » impossible to keep up a connection better of 30 sec - 1 min max ;
- USB connector fail » impossible to use the keyboard better of 30 seconds... ;

First i thought the problem became from the power, but i use a 5V/1A, better of the .7 recommended. After the installation of Byobu (a screen controller), I realized that the problem could not come from there because Byobu is running normally (the timer is running good and counters are moving good too). So my raspberry don't freeze (what i thought at the beginning).

Problem : i don't know where is the problem and how to solve it...

I hope community can help me because after three days of research, i haven't find anything can help me :/.

Do not hesitate to ask some more questions, i'll answer speedy.

Thanks all ;)

Hi Bardyl, I really, really feel for you as your posting was exactly my experience. I too have spent days and nights trying to get the Pi working, searching forums etc. I now know quite a bit about this Christmas present and it's issues and have spent loads on accessories. Today I sent it back to the supplier. I shall wait a year or so until the hardware has it's gremlins sorted out then maybe I will try again. I was so looking forward to this thing, I am bereft. After I post this there will be those with other opinions, fine, this is mine.

If the Ethernet AND USB are both failing, it could be X1(25.000MHz crystal). Try tapping it
or pushing on it. Mine just needed a tap. Others have probed it with a scope and it "magically"
started working. Still others have re-flowed the solder joints. Search google for "sleeping crystals"

I haven't had a problem with mine since, but it may come back....
