Accel. video playback in firefox?

Tue May 26, 2020 10:14 am

Hello all!

I was just wondering what is the current status of video playback from websites (such as youtube) on the pi4 using firefox (*not* chromium). I have a pi4 running the latest raspbian, my 'net speed is fast enough to show 720/1080 videos on youtube; I upped video memory to 256MB for the pi4 (raspi-config). I've also enabled the setting " layers.acceleration.force-enabled " to true. However video playback in firefox still struggles even with 720 playback.

I did find an extension called h265ify which blocks vp8/9 videos (which I understand aren't accelerated at all on the pi in hardware). This does make a difference but the pi is still clearly struggling and there are still lots of dropped frames and stuttering.

Anyone know much about what is going on with this at all? I've tried looking around online and drawn a blank.
