Like it says some file systems don't support symbolic links. Many do, but the commonly used FAT doesn't. Format the HDD or Memory stick with NTFS or EXT3 filesystem. The Symbolic links aren't that important. They don't contain data, they are just aliases for other files and folders. It kind of depends what you're copying. If you're copying your Windows 7 Documents file to a FAT formatted drive, you'll get it because Windows uses symbolic links for folders like 'My Pictures' which just Link to the Pictures folder. You won't lose the pictures just the alias.
